Yes, another Yum Cha review. This review will be short and sweet because there's not much I can fault about this venue. The owners of Payneham Chinese Restaurant are the old owners of Gouger Palace, before that they were the original owners of Chef Lai, so they've been around for many years, and my stomach has always followed. Their standard of food hasn't changed much over the years, and my taste buds have used their flavours for my Yum Cha benchmarking.
| Scallop dumplings - pastry is thin and very light. Filling is very generous and not overly salty |
| Har Gow - one of the best |
| Prawns in rice pastry - very light translucent pastry and large prawns make this a winner |
| Siu Mai - lots of shiitake flavours and the meat is fatty and non-chewy |
| Chicken's feet - another winner. One of the best around |
| Fried Tofu with prawn - nothing to flaw here. Tofu is moist, with a very crunchy skin |
| Deep Fried Eggplant with prawn filling - Ding Hao's is better |
| BBQ pork pastry - very nice crispy pastry, bbq inside is not sweet or salty - just right |
| Taro puffs - the only failure, a bit too deep fried |
| Chinese donuts wrapped with rice pastry - need I say more? YUM! |
Egg Tart - dessert time, and always very nicely done - sweet, crispy, fresh pastry!

There are many choices for Yum Cha in Adelaide, but Payneham Chinese Restaurant with its proven track record over many years is definitely one of the best. As with many Chinese restaurants service and ambience is not a highlight.
Super Bomberman gives Payneham Chinese Restaurant 15/20 chops on the Chopping Board
Ambiance 3/5
Service 3.5/5
Food 8.5/10

ReplyDeleteWhere is this?
Thanks
307 Payneham Road, Royston Park - 5070
ReplyDeleteWhen you mention Chef Lau, is that Chef Lau that used to be on Unley Road over 12 or 15 years ago?
ReplyDeleteSorry, my mistake, I meant Chef Lai, not Lau. Post has been amended now.

Thanks for the kind words. If you enjoy Yum Cha and in the city, try Ding Hao.
