Rice Chinese Cuisine - Char Siu heaven!

After two days without eating rice for dinner I was starting to get a strange feeling like I was missing something. What better place to quell this strange feeling than Rice Chinese Cuisine in Parkside! On a Saturday night Rice was packed with groups of families, friends and a scattering of couples. As with many Chinese restaurants, the atmosphere can only be described with one word - loud.

With entrees costing upwards of $8, it was decided for greater value my boyfriend and I would choose three mains to share. These were the beef brisket hot pot, ginger and shallot crocodile with mixed vegetables and honey roasted pork fillet.

The beef brisket was tender and had a good mix of flank meat and tendon. On the other hand, the broth was a little watery and required a much needed boost in the meatiness flavour factor. A nice touch was including broth braised radish chunks in the dish.

The crocodile was chosen for something a bit different and it did not disappoint. I love how crocodile can taste like a meatier version of chicken but can also allude to elements of seafood. The Crocodile fillet was tender, while the stir fried vegetables had retained their crispness. Subtle flavours and a thin covering of sauce made this dish a light and tasty option.

We had purposely come to Rice with the intention of trying their honey roasted pork fillet (or Char Siu) - suggestions had been made that this would blow our taste buds. And WOW. This was oh-my-goodness GOOD. The pork fillet was meltingly tender and had a fantastic fat to meat ratio. The ends of each piece had caramelised from the vast quantity of honey combined with a high roasting heat. Every piece glistened enticingly and held the promise of tasting as good as it looked. My one and only qualm would be the size of the dish being a tad small.

Best Char Siu (honey roast pork fillet) in Adelaide!

Rice Chinese Cuisine is another suburban gem that is worth a try. Service was prompt and dishes arrived within 15 minutes. However, it should be noted that prices are a little higher than your usual Chinese fare with mains ranging between $15 and $30. I would probably attribute this to the Parkside location.

Ambience: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Food: 8/10  (most points are for the Char Siu - do try it!)
