A Hereford Beefstouw - satisfying the steak craving!

A few weeks ago I caught up with some friends for dinner to satisfy our steak cravings.  Having been to Sosta and Gaucho's on numerous occasions we decided to visit A Hereford Beefstouw to see how their steaks compared.
Table setting at AHB

We arrive and are promptly seated at a table.  Great rustic vibe with lots of casual banter from the patrons.  Once we are seated we are presented with our menus and the waitress explains to us how to order our meals.  The ordering concept is simple - add your initials, choose your cut of steak (via a number assigned to it), select how your steak is to be cooked, choose your potato and butter type.

I must admit that the ordering process was quite seamless and I thought that it was a great idea.  Our meals arrive and we start the eating!  One thing which I did like which differentiated AHB from other steak houses is that it doesn't provide sauce for the steak, rather, your liquid is provided through a number of different butters.

There is not much to say about the steak (250g fillet) - it was cooked as requested, flavoursome meat with a subtle butter and a decent serving of chips (having said that, the chips were a little too salty for my liking).  My friends also commented that their steaks were cooked well and overall, they were happy with their dishes.

A Hereford Beefstouw is not bringing anything significantly new to the table but if you are wanting to try something different than the standard Gaucho's or Sosta's I recommend giving AHB a go.

Ambiance - 4/5:  Lots of casual chatter, great vibe
Service - 4/5:  Very attentive, prompt service
Food - 7/10:  Well cooked steak and good wine list

Overall, Mirko gives AHB 15/20 chops on the chopping board.

  1. Try Red Ochre Grill for a great steak cant goes past the quality, view and service

  2. I was quite disappointed by AHB. Went with a Danish houseguest for a laugh, she enjoyed it and the waitress was fantastic and spent a long time chatting with us in Danish. The service as a whole was excellent, and i don't think it was just because of the local link, the waitress was just a star.

My food however.... my steak was pretty disappointing. Not much flavour from the meat, the lobster tail served as surf and turf was pretty dry, but worst of all for a meat restaurant, seriosuly overcooked. A medium-rare arrived medium-well, but companions medium arrived a perfect medium-rare (which she had no problem with). They didn't put the wrong steaks down as we had different cuts, the orders were right, just cooked badly.

Having said that, the roast potato accompaniment was excellent, perfectly cooked and very generous,, the salad bar and house sauce also very good. But the star was the gravlax entree, i would go back for that.

Just a pity that my steak was a let down, if that had been as good as the rest i think i would be rushing back. As it was, i might give it a second try to redeem itself, but won't be recommending it until then.

  3. Hey Ben, thanks very much for your comments. Very sad that you had a bad experience there! I had been once prior to the visit that this post was based on and again my steak was cooked as requested so hopefully (for your sake) this was just a one off thing for you!
