Quick Chop - Cronuts - New York's latest craze in Adelaide

Ok, I rarely get on board a trend, but, Cronuts may just have won me over. All around the world it seems people are going crazy for the Cronut. In NYC, people are lining up for hours to have one (article and pics). But not in Adelaide, we have our very own Cronut bakers right here at Jenny's Bakery!

Basically, a Cronut is a hybrid between a croissant and a donut, hence the name. While Jenny's version may not be an exact replica of the NYC version, I'll take what I can get in our little Adelaide! They have different choices everyday, and on this particular day, we chose the following two:  But be warned, they usually sell out by lunch time, so get in early to avoid disappointment!

If you are looking at these pictures thinking, they look delicious, then, a picture tells a thousand words and those words would be part of the story! The dough is quite unique - fluffy, yet dense, sweet with a slight savoury quality. They definitely feel like a cross between a croissant and a donut!

Individually, the chocolate hazelnut was my favourite, with the filling almost resembling Nutella in flavour.  Crunchy praline on the top was a great textural addition. The salted caramel had a smooth, not too sweet caramel filling, with some buttery-ness that I believe provides the popcorn element (plus the popcorn on top of course!) Still great in flavour, just not my fave!

Priced at $4.50-$5, they are a great treat with a coffee (Veneziano beans, with a single origin option available). I have heard of some cafes on selling these for $7.50, and some dessert bars selling them for over $12, so skip the middle man and get on down to Jenny's Bakery and try the Cronuts while the craze is still around!

UPDATE:  After posting this on our site, fellow blogger Mirko decided to make the trek to Jenny's Bakery to see if he could get his hands on some Cronuts!  Arriving there almost at closing, he was fortunate to find three lonely Cronuts waiting to be purchased.  So with his $10 he purchased 2 of the pistachio Cronuts (One for Mirko and one for Jess...these were the only flavour left) - which for us was great as its added a third Cronut to the review.  This is what they had to say:

The Cronut was delicious.  At first glance it looks like a very rich, heavy dessert, but it surprisingly isn't.  The pistachio cream filling was very smooth and delicate in flavour with the pistachio nuts adding some crunch.  Jess could easily smash two ha ha.  To reiterate, the staff mentioned that they tend to sell well in the morning and therefore you should try and get in before lunch.

  2. I tried the lemon meringue, chocolate & peppermint, and caramel latte. Holy crap if these all aren't some of the most delicious things you can eat. The pastry is a crisp noncrumbly croissant texture with such a soft pleasant cushiony interior that melts; think crispy creme x 10.

    the custard filling and praline in the choc mint was ridiculous and I shudder at the calorific impact but oh so good. Big thumbs up y'all
