Vietnam Restaurant is another one of those places that doesn't need much of an introduction.  Arguably one of Adelaide's best Vietnamese establishments, I'm ashamed of myself that it has taken this long to finally post a review to spread the good word.

Since having kids, I usually get takeaway and rarely come here for a sit down meal, simply because eating the kind of food you are about to see below requires both hands, full concentration and the slower you are, someone else will surely snag the last meatball or delicious BBQ quails.

Seriously, this is one of my favourite restaurants in Adelaide, not only because the food is second to none, but it is also amazingly priced for the amount of food you get.  The example below was enough to feed 6 adults with plenty to spare for next day lunch all for $20 each.

First up, my two favourite dishes are the Pork Balls and Sugar Cane Prawns.  These two dishes are a 'DIY' cold roll type dish where you dip rice paper into hot water, lay it out on a plate and start loading it with ingredients. Side ingredients include rice vermicelli, pickled carrots and cabbage, mint, coriander, lettuce and the secret sauce.  The above serving size was two serves of pork balls and one serve of sugar cane prawns - plenty for 6 adults.

Next up, another one of my favourites - BBQ Quails.  If you think KFC is finger licking good, you haven't lived until you've tasted this.  The quail goes amazingly well with beer.  If you love spicy food, you can't go wrong.

Salt and Pepper Squid
If you think you've found the best Salt and Pepper Squid, but it isn't Vietnam Restaurant - I urge you try these ones and judge again.  The squid in this dish is amazingly soft, coated in a batter which is crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, sprinkled with fresh chili and spring onions, this dish is a sure winner with rice.

Speaking of rice, the Combination Hot Pot Rice is a must.  The take away serving (Large) above came with 3 containers.  White rice is placed inside a well oiled clay hot pot, topped with chicken, char siu, onions Chinese sausage, golden needle vegetables, egg and sauce.  The hot pot is heated so that the rice is charred and becomes crusty.  When ready to serve, it is mixed well.

Having a bowl of this to accompany all the above dishes is just a magical experience.  Another dish I highly recommend is the Combination Salad.

When a restaurant has been consistently serving me great food for over 20 years, it's hard not to be biased. However I am always searching for somewhere to call my new 'favourite' but haven't had any success.  So until then, I highly recommend Vietnam Restaurant for some delicious Vietnamese cuisine especially when you have a few friends or family to get a large table to share the food.

Ambiance - 3.5/5: The inside is a bit small, wouldn't suggest bringing a pram. They do have high chairs in good condition. But great for a large group wanting to enjoy a good feast.
Service - 3.5/5: Over the years, they've always been pretty good, however staff are sometimes not the friendliest.
Food: 9.5/10: I just can't find any better.

In total, Hayes gives Vietnam Restaurant 16.5/20 chops on the Chopping Board.

    Vietnam has been serving me great food for years.
    I'm sure they have won a national award in the past. It's great to see their standards have remained high.

    1. Thanks for dropping by again Chef. Consistency is definitely why I return. Yes, there's always a better restaurant that serves a dish better, but overall consistency, this wins hands down in Adelaide.

  3. I found this restaurant to have gone down hill in service and quality and have stopped going there. pork Balls were always served with sliced cucumber and these guys stopped it for no reason. They also tried scamming on the amount of rice paper. Every time we ordered two serves of pork balls they only ever brought out one serve of rice paper and tried charging us when we asked for more.

    Service became shocking and unfriendly, especially when they did not get a tip!!!
