Joy Discovery - Inner and outer satisfaction

Joy Discovery - 13 Bent St, Adelaide

If you spend time with vegans, in vegan forums or you're in vegan Facebook groups, you'll have heard about Joy Discovery. Next door to Zenhouse (another vegan institution), it is a modestly designed cafe filled with the sound of Tibetan chanting. Definitely a welcome oasis from the hustle and bustle of Rundle St.

Until I began writing this review, I didn't know the philosophy behind Joy Discovery. It is owned and operated by the students of spiritual master, Sri Chinmoy. It is one of many divine enterprises worldwide based on the meditation teacher's philosophy of loving and serving humanity. That explains the inspirational cards offered to guests on each table.

The staff are all dressed in saris and work with what I can only describe as an inner-peace. The cafe is calming (which has nothing to do with the decor). I ordered a detox juice (carrot, apple, beetroot, celery and ginger) and Joy Discovery's speciality dish, The Not Dog. I took a seat at the raised bench soaked in sun and began reading the Sri Chinmoy cards before my juice arrived.

My juice was almost perfect. It was the right consistency, no ice and a good colour. I would've liked it to have more veggies and ginger in it but that's clearly my own taste. It wasn't long before my Not Dog arrived and I was pretty pumped about eating my first hot dog in over two years.

Not only was it a Not Dog but it was not presentation, not salad, not garnish, not fries. I grabbed my cutlery from the counter and dug in. The bun was fresh but the sort of bun you'd get at the Royal Adelaide Show. It was drenched in a mustard, tomato sauce and a sauce I couldn't identify (soy mayonnaise, maybe). The hot dog was good, not too spicy but had strong a enough flavour to cut through the sauce. It had the same texture I remember my last meat hot dog having and tasted strangely similar.

Next time I dine at Joy Discovery, I'll opt for the dahl or one of the curries as I have a feeling this is really their speciality. more so than The Not Dog. If you do dine here, please bear in mind the philosophy of Joy Discovery, it's certainly not all about the food. The other thing you'll need to remember is it's only open Monday to Saturday, 8am - 4pm.

Ambiance - 4/5: The music and philosophy really made it for me.
Service - 4/5: Efficient, calming and friendly.
Food: 6/10: I'll definitely order a curry or salad next time.

In total, Tom gives Joy Discovery 14/20 chops on the Chopping Board.
