Quick Chop - Union Hotel burgers

Union Hotel - 70 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

Work team lunch on a Friday afternoon, and the Union Hotel was chosen.  I've been here many times, but have never tried their burgers.  I've eaten plenty of their cheap pizza deals and beers so it was about time I tried something different.

The Union burger and Cuban burger was going to be the choice, however today's special was a Union fried chicken burger which sounded quite good.  So a friend and I decided we would order the Union fried chicken and the Union beef burger to share, and hoping to return again one day to try the Cuban.

Burgers came out within a few minutes even on a busy Friday lunch.  Plenty of shoestring fries accompanied the burger which is always good.  We quickly cut the 2 burgers so we could see what was inside and share.

The bun is a fairly normal sesame seeded pub style bun, dry, thick and crusty - this was to be expected.

The fried chicken burger had 3 fairly large pieces of southern style fried chicken breast strips, with smoked bacon, Swiss cheese, caremalised onions, guacamole and Chipotle aioli.  First bite into this massive burger was a nice surprise, full of flavours all working together.  The original focus of the dry, crusty bun was quickly shifted away to all the awesome blending of ingredients inside.  The bacon, Swiss cheese and crusty deep fried chicken worked very well together.  A very tasty burger indeed.

The Union beef burger on the other hand, was a very traditional pub style burger, dry, thick overcooked meat patty with full meat flavours.  The meat patty tasted like a sirloin steak, meaning it was just meat, fat content was probably very minimal, making this patty dry and seemingly overcooked. Not sure what cheese was used, but it didn't seem as tasty as the Swiss cheese in the chicken burger. Not much more to say.....

My friend and I knew we should have ordered the Cuban burger instead!

Overall, Hayes gives the Union Chicken burger 8.5/10, and the Union beef burger 6.5/10 chops on the Chopping Board.

  1. Looks tasty, but is the price justified at 22 bucks? I can go down the road and get a press burger for 18.50 - and that's one hell of a burger.

    1. Totally agree with you on the Press* burger, however if you're after a 'pub' style burger, this is a great alternative, even though it is a bit pricey.
