The Cronut Burger - a burger to be Relish'd!

Relish'd Burger Bar - 730 Anzac Highway, Glenelg

As part of Relish'd Burger Bar's first birthday celebrations, we were invited to try their special birthday creation - a Cronut Burger. The Cronut Burger and one can of coke was provided free of charge. All other meals and drinks were purchased by Nathan who attended this event.

You can only imagine my excitement when I read that they were combining two of my loves (Cronuts & Burgers) into what sounded like a very ambitious creation. It reminded me of a burger that I heard off from the USA - the Luther Burger, or sometimes referred to as the Krispy Kreme Burger.

A fitting description
Upon arriving at Relish'd for lunch on their first birthday I spotted a Cronut Burger being served, and it looked delicious. Tall and handsome, with dripping cheese, lots of sugar and oozing mustard aioli. Ok, now I'm excited. Our approach was to try one Cronut Burger and also order one of their menu burgers, incase we didn't enjoy the Cronut Burger - possibly too hesitant on the day!

Tall, dark and handsome
I've started to describe the Cronut Burger above, however, more detail is definitely needed. The Cronut is a very sweet pastry, but has some great balance from the butter of the croissant and lightness of the overall pastry. Using this as a bun aligns with my normal love of sweeter glazed burger buns, but takes it to another level. Given the thickness of the cronut, it held up really well when soaked from the juices of the patty.

Not just a pretty face, beautiful on the inside too
The patty is the standard Relish'd beef patty, which is well cooked and seasoned. The cheese is melted on the top of the patty in the last stage of cooking, a technique I am a fan of. Relish'd also created a special bacon tomato relish for the Cronut Burger, that was sandwiched between the cheese and patty. This special relish is closer to the consistency of pesto than relish, thick and chunky with a great salty punch, contrasting the sweet bun and cheese. Another element created specially for the Cronut Burger is the mustard aioli, generously spread on the burger, it's a very welcome addition. The sweet / sour of the american style mustard finished the burger off and it wouldn't have been anywhere near as delicious without it. Both my wife and I came away from our Cronut Burger halves wishing we had ordered one each.

We also ordered the Relish'd burger with added cheese. I am definitely a fan of this burger. The bun is sweet, the patty nice, and the salads fresh and crispy. It's slightly larger than the burgers from Press* or Burger Theory, leaving you a little more content upon completion. For me, there was a little too much of the herb aioli, however, my wife did not agree, and I'll leave that up to you to decide when you try one.

The original still holds its own
For $8.90 they are a steal, and in Glenelg, where there isn't a lot of cheap, quick easy meals, I would recommend this to anyone. We also ordered some fries and onion rings. The fries were large, thick potato fingers with a good level of salt. Onion rings were good too, however, I was a little too full at this stage to truly enjoy them.

Chunky chips
The Cronut Burger was a great idea for a birthday special burger. As a once off special, it was different, and combined two of my favourite things, and I am glad I got to try it. Who knows, maybe Relish'd will bring it back for another special day in the future? I hope so, as next time, I am having one all to myself.

Nathan scores the birthday special Cronut Burger a very special 10/10. I can only hope it returns, maybe for my birthday :-)

Nathan scores Relish'd and the Relish'd burger 16/20 chops on The Chopping Board.
