Cafe Saba - Pho East Side

Cafe Saba - 7/47 The Parade, Norwood

Wanting a fix of pho but not wanting to head deep into the Western suburbs (cue Mansfield Park, Regency, Arndale), the boyfriend and myself chose to go to Cafe Saba. As the title of this blog post suggests, Cafe Saba is located on the Norwood Parade, towards the city end near Norwood Oval. With any Vietnamese restaurant you go to, I think it vital to judge a place on its pho. This delicious bowl of invigorating broth, fresh slices of beef and slippery noodles is the stuff of legends. Without fail pho is a dish that I will have at least once a week to benefit from it restorative qualities.

Combination Pho
The tamer of the two of us, my boyfriend chose the Pho Tai. This pho has fresh beef slices in steaming hot broth with thick rice noodles. The fresh beef slices are cooked in the broth, ensuring that the meat stays tender. Meanwhile, I went with combination pho which is similar to Pho Tai but with the addition of tendon, beef balls and tripe. The broth of both these phos were flavourful enough but were more mild in flavour than those achieved in the Western suburbs. Beef slices were fresh and sufficiently raw on arrival.

It should be mentioned that compared to Western suburbs phos, these were a tad smaller in size and slightly higher in price. However, given the location this is understandable - and both phos managed to hit our cravings which is all we wanted. So if you ever find yourself in the same position, on the East of the city and craving some Viet, Cafe Saba is a great option.
