Mahalia Coffee House, Robe - A destination not only for coffee lovers

Mahalia Coffee House - 2 Flint St, Robe

Before I begin, I will let you know that I was not invited to try or review the Mahalia Coffee House at Robe. During my travels, through the generosity of Mahalia, I was provided all products free of charge. As with all my reviews, this has not influenced my review.

Check out my other coffee reviews in the Adelaide Coffee Roundup.

When deciding which South Australian destination my family and I would visit, we had a tough time. We discussed the beautiful Clare Valley and its Riesling Trail, the Flinders Ranges and its great landscapes and walks, and the rugged coastlines of Robe and the Limestone Coast. Some further research then led us to decide on Robe, and its proximity to great food, coffee and wine.

The first thing that I thought about when we decided on Robe was the need to get to Mahalia Coffee. I've had many a cup of their beans from BTS on Pirie St, and have always wanted to visit their coffee house. Mahalia Coffee is an epicurean roasting house in Robe on the Limestone Coast and distributes their beans to cafes and retail outlets Australia wide. Once we had coffee sorted out, we could plan the rest of our trip.

I contacted Mahalia through their Facebook page, hoping to meet up, and also get some recommendations on where to eat from a local. If I am heading to any new location, I find this the best way to find out where to eat and drink. Mahalia provided some great recommendations, which will be featured in a later Robe roundup post. This post is dedicated to the Mahalia Coffee House.

The front of the coffee house
The coffee house is situated off the main street of Robe, about a 10 minute walk from the main street. At the moment, it has a small interior, with lots of great kitchen and coffee products and a few tables to sit at whilst eating your coffee and cake. When you enter, you smell freshly roasted coffee - an aroma that never ceases to provide me with a warm fuzzy feeling.

East Timor Single Origin Latte
On the day we visited, we had two lattes with the East Timor single origin that was on offer. We also ordered two cakes for morning tea, a chocolate pudding and a raspberry friand. The coffee was made by the main Barista, Sam. And a great coffee it was too. The coffee had a great sweetness throughout the cup, making it a great latte blend. The cakes were great too, and for such a small kitchen, the effort was still made to warm them up and present them nicely. Both were as expected, the pudding was chocolaty and heavy. The friand was lighter than most friands I have had, with plenty of raspberries.

Whilst you are sitting drinking your coffee, you are surrounded by a large selection of coffees, teas and other items that may take your fancy. Cups, tea pots, toys, plates and a great selection of coffee hardware should you need anything for your collection.

So many shelves of goodies
Once we had finished our coffee and cake, Sam offered me a tour of the factory, and to show me what they have currently got going on. I was able to see how they operate, shipping up to one tonne of roasted beans weekly.

Thomas, the No. 1 blue roaster
Sam also showed me through the renovations. It's a grand expansion they are embarking on, including a larger coffee roaster to cope with demand, and a viewing room for customers to watch the roasting process.

A large deck area was being installed at the rear, including a gate through to a brand new park at the rear. Great for watching the kids play whilst enjoying a coffee. I am definitely going to return to see how it turns out, and am especially excited about the brew bar plans too.

Taking it away
We also purchased two take away coffees from the Coffee House during our time in Robe, including a roadie for our trip back to Adelaide. This time, we weren't given any free coffees. The quality of the coffee on this visit matched that of the first day. Consistency is highest on my rating of coffee houses, and in the two visit's for a total of 6 coffees, we were impressed every time.

The team at Mahalia have big plans for expanding their product throughout Australia. They are currently stocking their beans in a number of Foodland stores (check their stockist list), so it is accessible for SA lovers of their brew. They also have a great coffee house, with excellent coffee, food and great people.  It certainly matches my favourite CBD coffee house, Bar 9.  For more of our coffee reviews click here.

Definitely worth the visit if you are heading down the Limestone Coast, or looking for a unique day trip.
