Big Protein - Shop 3, 746 Marion Rd, Marion
Working in Plympton, lunch food options are limited to a variety of fatty takeaway stores and the restaurant downstairs that has one vegan option. Needless to say, I usually pack my own lunch and toddle off to work like a school kid. Not this day.
It was 1:30pm, my tummy was over grumbling and had started making pickets in order to protest about the lack of food so I wondered into my neighbouring office and put the onus of what I should have for lunch on them. They told me about a new salad bar on Marion rd.
Wait, Marion rd?! Where is it? Squished between service stations, dodgy hotels and the biggest Harvey Norman on the planet? Well yes, it is.
Big Protein is located in the same group of shops as Foodland, diagonally across the road from the Marion Hotel. Inside, it looks like an old fish and chip shop that's had a lick of green paint and a good scrub to make it seem like a place where healthy food is sold.
The menu has a few base salads to work from and the idea is for you to add your own extras. Things like meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables and dressing. I opted for the Byron Bay salad. The words "Byron Bay" are written in rainbow writing on the menu board, which made me feel like a gay hippie - not so far from the truth, really.

Starting at the top, the tofu was a little rubbery but the rest of the salad was crisp and fresh. The mango dressing even had chunks of mango in it but the sweetness didn't quite work with some of the other ingredients. I feel like Big Protein markets itself to the gym goers in the area and not so much the health nuts like me.
That aside, I took a take away menu with me to study for when I next venture down Marion Rd and order my lunch from Big Protein.
