Star of Greece - Shining bright in Pt. Willunga (plus a visit to Willunga Farmers Market)

Star of Greece - 1 Esplanade, Port Willunga

On an incredibly warm Saturday, with the intention of celebrating my friend's completion of her thesis, we headed down to Pt. Willunga for a day of fun in the sun. But first stop - the Willunga Farmer's Market. Having not been before, we didn't know what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised. Fresh produce, delicious snacks, freshly squeezed juices, honey ice cream, I could go on and on!  I can completely understand why Willunga Farmers Market has been voted the best farmer's market in the State.  Some shots of the Willunga Farmers Market below.

After the beautiful markets, we headed down to Pt. Willunga for the main event - Star of Greece, overlooking the stunning beach side. On arriving we were kindly greeted and led to a table for four set beside windows. The waitress who was tending us for the meal offered to open the windows for us, which we kindly accepted. And how were we rewarded - the stunning views felt like we were on holiday!

On the day of our visit we decided to order a la carte, rather than the tasting menu, choosing house made bread with Fleurieu butter, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, Hervey Bay scallops, Kangaroo Island salt and pepper squid, oysters au natural and crispy fried with wakami and wasabi mayo, Market Fish, Battered Kangaroo Island King George Whiting and Beef Eye Fillet. This was all paired with chilled Turkey Flat Rose from the Barossa region.

Prior to our food coming out, we were offered a complimentary appetizer of scallops done in ceviche style with cucumber, Spanish onion salsa and fish roe. The scallops were fresh while the sour citrus dressing was a great way to whet our appetites.

Four slices of bread came out, two plain and another two with fig and walnut. Although it was evident the bread was fresh, it wasn't outstanding in flavour. Also, it would have been appreciated if the menu stated that two types of bread would be offered. Probably won't go down this path in the future.

The Hervey Bay scallops came out ever so slightly seared and served with a cashew nut crumble, ginger and spring onion. Scallops were tender and subtle in flavour however it would have been good if the scallops were served with a sauce but they were tasty nonetheless.

Next out were the Kangaroo Island salt and pepper squid, served with aioli and lime wedge. As with the scallops, the squid was fresh and tender - no fishy taste here. The squid was covered in a light batter that was well seasoned. The result was a moreish starter that had us all eyeing off the last piece.

Not usually a fan of oysters, I opted to have one done crispy fried. Sporting a similar light coating as the salt and pepper squid, this little morsel of oyster was juicy and soft. To top it off, the tart and creamy wasabi was the perfect accompaniment. The wakame seaweed - take it or leave it really. Personally, I didn't feel like this added much to the oyster and was a bit slimy for my liking.

The market fish of the day was snapper with grilled fennel, Coorong cockles, sweet peas, whitebait wafer and lemon butter. Fish was perfectly cooked and tender, while cockles were juicy and sweet - if only there could have been more! Whitebait wafer was crispy, however lacked flavour and would have benefited from some additional seasoning. The lemon butter was delicate in flavour and was a little too mild for my boyfriend's palate. Though it should be mentioned he is one who enjoys ferociously hot chill's. My friend also ordered this dish and unfortunately came across a short hair in her meal. Although this is disappointing, I'm a realist and can understand that this can happen from time to time. And in saying that, it's the way the restaurant deals with this which is what makes all the difference. The lady serving us was ever the professional, apologising profusely and immediately offering a replacement or an alternative. At the end of the meal, she reiterated that although they could not understand how this hair had found its way in the dish, they would work harder in ensuring this would not happen next time. And of course the value of this meal was removed from the final bill.

The eye fillet came out nicely charred on a bed of cauliflower purée and beef reduction. The beef itself was tender, despite evidently being a little further towards medium than medium rare. Beef reduction had a pleasant savoriness, was full bodied and had notes of umami. Lip smackingly good.

Lastly, my dish, was battered Kangaroo Island king George whiting with green apple, celery and herb salad, hand cut chips and aioli. It was with much deliberation that I chose this, thinking that getting essentially "fish and chips" at a place like Star of Greece would have been a wasted choice. Totally not a waste! Fish was succulent, flaky and fresh, lightly coated with a well seasoned crisp batter that melted in your mouth.  The salad was assembled with thought, bitter salad herbs well contrasted against sweet and tart slices of Granny Smith apples. The only area of improvement would have to be the hand cut chips, which resembled roast potatoes with their lack of crunch.

Our lunch at the Star of Greece was extremely enjoyable, despite the slight hair hiccup. Stunning views and impeccable service, the Star of Greece is a great location to take friends or family for a special occasion. Definitely worth a visit!
