Quick Chop! Tastes of NYC - Part 1

Tastes of New York City - Part 1

For those of you who don't know, I (Mirko) love to travel. This coupled with a love of food means my camera is riddled with foodporn pictures which I think should be shared with everyone.

Rather than doing detailed reviews on places and dishes, these are my recommendations to you - if any of you get a chance to visit some of the places that I have been. Enjoy!

New York City is one of the food capitals of the world, so when visiting here, I am never short of anywhere new to try. Here are some of my faves!

Katz's Deli - Pastrami on Rye with Pickles
This place is known for its sandwiches and the famous scene from When Harry Met Sally. The service staff are efficient and you get to try some of the meat before you purchase your meal. Delicious!

Collared Greens, Mac and Cheese and Fried Chicken at Sylvia's
Chicken and Waffles at Sylvia's

Sylvia's Soul Food restaurant is located in Harlem and is an institution when it comes to this type of cuisine. Big servings at a decent price. Be mentally and physically ready to eat as some of these dishes can be heavy!

Creme Brulee Doughnut - Doughnut Plant
Before the Cronut craze, there were donuts, and there is nothing better than the Creme Brulee donut. Sugar glazed top with a soft pastry and smooth, creamy creme brulee filling - what more could you want?

Volcano bun from Momofuku Milk Bar

David Chang of Momofuku fame is still going strong. After previously visiting his fine dining establishment Ma Peche, I wanted to give his dessert store - Milk Bar a go. I was not disappointed. Milk Bar has a range of savoury snacks of which I tried to volcano bun - soft bun filled with bacon and potato gratin - really....what more could you ask for?!

Cookies and Pretzel Milk from Momofuku Milk Bar
Anyone with a sweet tooth will appreciate his cookie range. I ordered the Compost Cookie, Cornflake Choc-chip Cookie and Blueberry Cookie. All cookies were slightly firm giving way to a chewy inside. I coupled this with a Pretzel Milk which has a slight savoury undertones followed by a sweet finish - very enjoyable.

Addicted to Crack! Crack Pie from Momofuku Milk Bar
One of David Chang's most famous desserts - the Crack Pie. This dessert is very sickly and one slice is definitely enough. Caramelly and chewy, decadent and delicious - I was addicted (maybe it wasn't icing sugar sprinkled on the top?)

Shake Shack - The best burger I have ever had
For those who have been to the US or spoken to Americans who have been to both the East and West Coast there is always debate about the best burger - Shake Shack (East Coast) or In-n-Out (West Coast). After trying both, I am going to say that Shake Shack is the winner - hands down!

When I eat at Shake Shack I order the basic Shack Burger. The bun is soft and slightly sweet with a meat patty cooked medium with oozing melted cheese. Fries are cooked to perfection and coupled with a frozen custard - I am in heaven! Go around Christmas time and they have special frozen custard flavours. On this occasion it was the sweet potato.

  1. If you're ever in Queenstown, New Zealand try out the Fergburger...they are the biggest burgers I've ever seen...and by the looks of it possibly bigger than the shake shack burger...
