Run Amuk - hot dogity!

Run Amuk - 386a South Tce, South Fremantle, WA

On our way back from Rottnest Island, in between napping on the boat, we were looking for somewhere to eat dinner. This is usually a harder task than anticipated because; a) I'm vegan b) we like quirky places and c) we like to minimise the risk of eating to the soundtrack of screaming kids.

We stumbled upon Run Amuk; a vegan friendly gourmet hotdog joint in Fremantle. The Yelp reviews told us it's Freo's hot new fast food joint and if you can't get a table, to take your hotdogs to the beach (a few streets away).

From the outside, you can see a few tables topped with Where's Wally pages and filled with small groups of happy diners sitting on comfy drummer's stools (is there a technical term for that?). Inside is small but not cramped, you'll find a few more tables, the open kitchen, a drinks fridge with a good selection of American sodas and a wall mural of toy cars (if you have any toy cars with you, bring them along to have them stuck on the wall). It has a contemporary American diner feel to it which I like.

We ordered housemade ginger lemonade, Mark ordered the Rukus hotdog and (following the instructions on the menu) I ordered a locally handmade vegan hotdog with Minx topping. While we waited for our meals, we couldn't help but look for Wally on the table top. We didn't find him but our lemonade arrived and they tasted better than any homemade lemonade I'd tasted before. Full of lemon and ginger with enough bitterness to make you wince.

Presented on wave-shaped metal plates, our hotdogs arrived with a side of fries (ordered as an extra). Mark tucked into his Rukus, filled with a bratwurst sausage, chili and lime sambal, crispy prosciutto, spinach, aged cheddar, sour cream and jalapeƱos. It's rated with two chilis on the menu (mild-medium) and judging by the way Mark was inhaling it, the heat didn't bother him.

My vegan sausage was topped with guacamole, tomato relish, corn, capsicum, red onion and mint. Had it not been a vegan order, a squiggly line of sour cream would've been squeezed on top. With a menu of gourmet ingredients, I was hoping the bun would compliment the fillings, I wasn't disappointed. It was a little bit crispy on the outside and fresh on the inside but not fluffy like you might expect. The bread was dense and adequately held all the ingredients together.

The fries on the side were brilliantly cooked. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, my only complaint is that we didn't order two serves!

The thing I love about Run Amuk is all the sausages are locally made. Carnivores will appreciate them being made up of 70% pork and 30% beef then loaded with fresh herbs and spices. The bratwurst sausages are free from anything artificial and there's not a skerrick of gluten to be found in them. And vegetarians aren't shoved in a corner with a substandard tofu and potato sausage, as much care and consideration has been put into making the vegan sausage as the bratwurst and it shows.

Ambiance - 4/5: it's a cool space but it didn't buzz like I'd hoped.
Service - 4/5: Friendly and fast but minimal.
Food: 8.5/10: Based on my vegan hotdog and fries

In total, Tom gives Run Amuk 16.5/20 chops on The Chopping Board.
