The Seasonal Garden Cafe - seasonal produce, everyday food.

The Seasonal Garden Cafe - 79 Main Rd, Hahndorf

Every so often I get a little ambitious and decide to walk unnecessarily long distances. This time, Hahndorf was our destination. With the dogs in toe, we made our way along the Heysen Trail and ended up on the Main Rd in Hahndorf.

I'd heard a lot about The Seasonal Garden Cafe and had it on my list of places to try. The stone verandah is lined with fresh root vegetables and a few small tables lead the way to a comfy outdoor setting at the end of the verandah. Inside feels like an old country farm house. Big wooden tables and chairs occupy the main space and in the room next door, an old shop counter stands proud against a backdrop of mis-matched jars filled with seeds, nuts, herbs and spices.

Walk down the hallway and you'll find yourself passing the kitchen and into an outdoor eating space. We didn't venture out there for too long because I was pre-occupied with all that was happening inside.

We took a seat on the verandah and browsed the basic but adequate menu. There are four or five items, most of them seasonal with the addition of a burger.

We both ordered a selection of salads. Mark had three and I had two (one had feta). As usual, we ordered two huge green smoothies to quench our thirst and put back what the long walk took out.

Our smoothies arrived thick and fast. These are one of the best examples of a true green smoothie I've tasted. Thick and smooth with a few seeds and loaded with fresh fruit and vegetables. Served in a vintage milk bottle (not a jar!), they came with a thick straw to suck all the goodness up through.

Possibly the best green smoothie I've had all year.
A few moments later and our salads arrived along with a huge smile and a genuine "I hope you enjoy your meals". With big chunks of sweet potato, crunchy nuts and seeds balanced with the bitterness of crisp greens, my salad hit the spot.

Mark's additional salad with creamy feta and beetroot looked amazing and almost tempted me to cross to the dark side... not quite though.

We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying our position on the verandah, nibbling bliss balls served on a vintage tea saucer and watching the world go by. Not feeling up to the epic journey home, we called a cab and settled in at home with tummies full of seasonal garden goodies.

Ambiance - 4.5/5: It feels like a home away from home. So comfy and relaxed.
Service - 4/5: Super friendly and genuine.
Food: 8.5/10: Substantial salads with chunky ingredients and awesome bliss balls but those smoothies, OMG the smoothies.

In total, Tom gives The Seasonal Garden Cafe 17/20 chops on The Chopping Board.
