The Attic - it won't raise the roof

We were on the hunt for a fresh, heathy, quick breakfast before we headed over to Rottnest Island, so we turned to Yelp and found The Attic right across the road from our hotel.


Hessian covered cushions, wooden slatted furniture and step ladders to sit on, this place is a true hipster paradise - and that's just the furniture! The menu is minimalist with dishes like sourdough topped with avocado, ricotta and lime. We opted for two juices, sprouted buckwheat granola, toasted sourdough and Bircher muesli.

Our juices were freshly squeezed and by the sound of it, not with a cold press juicer. The flavours were well balanced and not too sweet - the perfect morning juice! Our meals arrived shortly after and we were both amazed at the presentation. The chunky earthy plates were a pleasant change from the usual white (or a chopping board, pan, pot, jar or basket) and each component of the dishes was carefully placed. The garnish of edible micro leaves, toasted coconut, chia seeds and nuts all added to the flavour and texture of the dishes.

My granola was lightly toasted, not too sweet and came with a side of soy milk (in addition to the coconut yoghurt). Goji berries, sultanas, fresh kiwi and nectarines added sweetness to compliment the slight bitterness of the buckwheat and millet.

The only thing to make lightly toasted soughbough better is a homemade preserve. It was runny and soaked into the sourdough like honey on a hot crumpet. The preserve was tart enough to know its homemade with formed chunks of fruit that made me think it was made within the last few days.

Mark described his Bircher as "substantial". I don't know what that means but I can tell you, it was chunky and thick with a good serve of fruit compote, nuts, seeds and toasted coconut.

The service is what we've come to expect from Fremantle - friendly and efficient. The only thing I can criticise is the lady who served us not knowing if the chef had ordered coyo for my granola or not and really, if that's all I can come up with, it was a good experience.

Ambiance - 4/5: 90% hipster and proud of it.
Service - 3.5/5: Friendly and efficient but lacked knowledge
Food: 7/10: Based on the granola and toast, I kinda wish there was more fruit in the granola.
