Yulli's - a rad soundtrack

Yulli's - 417 Crown St, Surry Hills, Sydney

Vegan and vegetarian Sydney-siders are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in the city. Admittedly the bulk of vegan restaurants are hidden away in Newtown but there's no need to douse yourself in patchouli oil and jump on the train if you want a good vegan feed in Surry Hills.

Yulli's is one of those places a vegetarian or vegan can take their meat eating mates and know they won't be disappointed. Inside, it's chic enough to be inner-city cool and alternative enough not to feel too pretentious. The inside dining space is populated by wooden chairs and crate-like tables with clear acrylic tops. There's a geometric rope design on the ceiling that looks more like an art installation than a decorative addition.

Outside, a clever use of space has seen the corridor leading to the toilets made into an outside dining space with a cosy booth at the back. Warning: the heaters outside are hotter than the surface of the sun - leave your jackets at home or in the car if you're sitting outside!

I requested the vegan menu, which is a convenient breakdown of all the dishes on the regular (vegetarian) menu that are either vegan or can easily be made vegan with a few substitutes. There's also a nice selection of vegan craft beer and wine to choose from.

Torn between the falafel plate and the vegetable sambal, our waiter recommended the sambal without hesitation. Speaking of the wait staff, these guys are super efficient, a little alternative and unbelievably friendly - something not often found in Sydney.

After 25 minutes, our meals arrived and I was so hungry, I started eating without taking a photo of my food (bad, bad blogger). So I've used a photo from www.veganopoulous.wordpress.com to give you an idea of what it looks like. The crispy rice noodles, lightly cooked fresh vegetables and the blend of delicious sauces make this one of my all-time favourite vegan dishes. The rice was a little gluggy for me and I would've preferred brown rice but mixed with the sweet sauce on the side, I ate it anyway and finished with a very full tummy.

All but licked clean.
This was my fourth trip to Yulli's and I'll definitely be back. I can also recommend the crepe and the sticky date pudding - neither of which I had on the this visit.

Ambiance - 4/5: Comfortable, not too squishy and a rad soundtrack.
Service - 4/5: Genuinely friendly and helpful but have been a little slow on previous visits.
Food: 8/10: A great selection of vegetarian and vegan meals even your meat eating mates will love.

In total, Tom gives Yulli's 16/20 chops on The Chopping Board.

  1. Thanks for linking back :) I'd definitely head straight to Yulli's if I go back to Sydney. The entree dumplings I had were awesome!
