Kutchi Deli Parwana - new beginnings

Kutchi Deli Parwana - 7 Ebenezer Plc, Adelaide

With Nathan in Thailand and Tom in Hong Kong and Vietnam, it'd been a while since they'd caught up. It was time to reignite the bromance.

Unless you've been living in a far away land with no outside contact, you will have heard about the family owned and operated business increasing it's footprint from a modest shop on Henley Beach Rd to a cute Afghan street-food-inspired premise in Ebenezer Place. Don't go thinking these guys have made their way into the big smoke and compromised their food quality - in fact, it's quite the opposite.

Kutchi Deli Parwana is the second chapter to the Parwana story (Mirko has previously reviewed Parwana here). At the heart of Kutchi, meaning nomad or gypsy in Farsi, is a story of migration and new beginnings. Run by the children and partners of Parwana owners, Kutchi reflects a traditional sense of Afghanistan while embracing a chapter of change that brings with it new opportunities.

Outside is modest with a few wooden tables offering undercover seating for diners and those waiting for take away orders. Inside is bright and colourful; the walls and counter are covered with tiles imported from India, the doors were found at a salvage yard and the trinkets adorning the walls are family heirlooms and collectables. This heart-felt, authentic masterpiece is a welcome escape from the busy streets outside.

In the middle of Adelaide's Arctic weather, we ordered a cup of traditional tea. Not at all overpowering and lightly spiced, this was exactly what we needed to warm our hands and tummies.

Lamb Boulagnee - Kutchi Beli Parwana, Adelaide
Lamb Boulagnee

Nathan ordered a Lamb Boulagnee, which arrived first and with a minted yoghurt dipping sauce. Having never tried one before, I (Nathan) was not sure what to expect. When it arrived I was excited to unpack the box! The closest thing I have had to this before is a stuffed Indian paratha, but it's only similar in looks and structure. This bread is chewy and stretchy, and the stuffing was generous with lots of potatoes and ground lamb. When torn apart with your hands and dipped in the yoghurt, it was a warm, comforting and satisfying experience.

My (Tom) vegan Boulagnee arrived soon after. Not really knowing what to expect, I picked at the stretchy dough and nibbled at the edges before getting stuck in. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say its taste is similar to a vegetarian Cornish pasty and the texture is similar to a freshly cooked naan bread.

Served in a takeaway box, it makes the perfect lunch to grab on the run and eat on your way back to the office. It's tasty, filling and not too heavy.

Gulab Jamun

What sort of review would this be without including dessert? We ordered two gulab jamun to finish our lunch. We were both expecting these to be really dense like a dumpling but instead, they were light and fluffy like cake. Covered with sugar syrup, they were moist and superbly fresh - perfect for a 3pm snack or morning tea at the office.

Oh hang on, did you take a photo first? - Gulab Jamun
Our bill came to a bargain $34 for 2 meals, a bottle of water, 2 teas and 2 gulab jamun - seriously, I don't know where else you can get lunch for 2 for under $35 in the CBD. We arrived just after midday and watched the line increase in size but move relatively quickly. These guys are only open for lunch but if you fancy dinner, head to Parwana Afghan Kitchen at 124B Henley Beach Road.

Nathan and Tom give Kutchi Deli Parwana 18/20 Chops on The Chopping Board.
