The Local Grind Cafe & Restaurant - A new local?

The Local Grind Cafe & Restaurant - 33 Warwick St  Walkerville

When you live slightly north east of the city, you get used to having to travel a little to check out a new cafe when you have had enough of our local faves like The Coffee Barun. When I (Nathan) read that The Local Grind Cafe was opening in the recently completed Watson series of the Art Hotels in Walkerville, I was excited to check it out. I waited a little while to let them settle in before heading over and this is the result.

Pulled Pork Shoulder Ciabatta - $15.90
The cafe is in a really nice position, with lots of tall gum trees and a nice outlook from a few outside tables. Inside, there is a lot of recycled timber adjoining the walls, along with some furniture that I found out they had constructed them selves. We took a seat at one of the taller tables along the wall and had a read through the 'brunch' menu (they have two different menu's, dinner and brunch). The menu isn't huge, with the focus on local produce, and a mix of brunch and bigger (11am onwards) plates to choose from. Being here at lunch means we settled on the slightly larger choices of beer battered local fish and chips and the pulled pork shoulder ciabatta.

Beer Battered Local Fish and Chips - $20.90
Both dishes came out within a reasonable time. I enjoyed the ciabatta, there was ample meat, with the coleslaw adding a nice tang and crunch. The chilli oil added a bit of zing which balanced the roll out nicely. The fish was cooked well, with a lot of crunch in the beer batter and the side of aioli adding some creaminess and zing. The potatoes that came along with the dish were super crunchy, and a definite highlight. We also ordered a side serve of the shoe string fries (because we didnt already have enough carbs on our plates). In the picture they look a little undercooked, but it was just weird lighting and they were crunchy and well salted.

Shoe String Fries w/ Aioli - $6.90
I also grabbed a coffee. I love the custom made cups here, very unique and great to drink from. The coffee was nice, but when I asked at the counter what beans were used, they person serving me didn't know. I couldn't see any bags either. Since this visit, I have returned, and was pleased to both see and hear, that the cafe is now roasting their own beans. I will have an update on their coffee soon.

Latte - $3.90
I would definitely return if I was in need of a good lunch. The coffee alone wouldn't bring me back, but the overall experience was pleasant and while not exactly a bargain, it was affordable. Definitely somewhere to try if you live north east of the city, or find yourself in the Walkerville area.

Nathan gives The Local Grind 14/20 Chops on The Chopping Board.

Food: 7/10 - Great lunch option in the Walkerville area, although a little expensive
Service: 3/5 - Staff were pleasant enough, but should have known where the coffee was from.
Ambiance: 4/5 - Great location and views
