Hello Fresh - making cooking easy

Whilst you may see a lot of eating out on this blog, you may be a little surprised to hear we don't eat out every night! So when we were approached by HelloFresh to try out their service for 5 nights, I (Nathan) jumped at the chance to try it out. The 5 day box was provided to us by HelloFresh at no cost. Since the delivery of the box, we have ordered additional boxes, Amanda has ordered multiple, and many of our friends and family have ordered and thoroughly enjoyed the service. Now onto the reasons why!

On the doorstep!
The basic concept of the HelloFresh service is home delivered main meals, that come with an excellent recipe card and all the ingredients you need to make them. It's delivered to the door early in the week, with all the cold goods in a little esky and the rest of the ingredients in the box. Quite handy if you're time strapped! I rummaged through the box, and I immediately noticed the range of fresh ingredients, the quality cheeses and meats, and the wide range of meals that we had to cook this week.

Ingredients selection for the Chorizo, Haloumi, & Zucchini Medley

Chorizo, Haloumi, & Zucchini Medley

Eagerly, we cooked up our first meal of the week, the Chorizo, Haloumi, & Zucchini Medley.(Haloumi, Zucchini, Chorizo, Sundried Tomatoes, Rocket, Lemon). The chorizo was the highlight for me, it had a great flavour and balanced well with a good dose of paprika. The rest of the ingredients balanced well, and the dish felt healthy whilst being very moorish with the haloumi. The dish itself took us a little longer than the instructions, but it was simple enough to cook.

Beef Chow Mein
Meal #2 was the Beef Chow Mein (Vermicelli Noodles, Beef Mince, HelloFresh Chinese 5 Spice, Garlic, Ginger, Long Chilli, Broccoli, Red Cabbage, Snow Peas, Spring Onions). Another easy mid week meal! We enjoyed the simplicity of this dish, fry mince, throw in vegies, throw in the noodles. Done. And it was very tasty too. Ours may have been a little more 'noodley' than others may have cooked as I failed to read the instructions properly and used 4 persons worth of noodles!

Penne al Tonno
Meal #3 was the Penne al Tonno (Chilli, Lemon, Garlic, Penne, Tuna, Rocket, Parsley, Tomato). The Tuna is suggested to be cooked closer to rare than we cooked it, but my wife was pregnant at the time so we cooked it to well done. The salad is light, with freshness from the lemon, pepper from the rocket, and a hint of heat from the chilli. The tuna matches well to the salad, and the addition of the pasta makes it a little more filling. Another good mid week healthy meal, with plenty of flavour and taste.

Rosemary Pork with Fragrant Pear and Prunes
Our 4th meal is the Rosemary Pork (Balsamic, Pork Neck Steaks, Potatoes, Pear, Dried Prunes, Rocket). This was probably our least favourite meal of the week. The Pork Neck steaks weren't that meaty, they had a lot of fat, and didnt cook that well. I usually slow cook Pork Neck, which is then pulled as it takes time for this cut to break down. I think the choice of cut let the meal down. The prune, pear and potato mix is certainly different, but worked well with the pork. The rosemary also works well with the pork and the balsamic dressed rocket helped to break up all the sweet flavours.

Speedy Chicken Run Kiev with Sweet Potato Wedges
Our last meal of this box was the Chicken Kiev. We left this til last as it took the longest time to prepare and cook, so we wanted it on the last night of the week. It's probably the most 'moorish' of all the meals, as the Kiev is rich, with the gooey cheese that oozes out as soon as you cut through it. It's also probably the most technical meal, with the hardest part getting that chicken cut right so they don't split. It was a delicious meal, the sweet potato chips were a great addition.

The HelloFresh boxes do as the slogan says, they make cooking easy. We had a good time learning new dishes, without spending hours cooking after busy days at work. We enjoyed the variety especially, and the boxes are so well designed, you don't have to think about a lot. The ingredients are all there, the guides, including helpful pictures to guide you through each step are great. Another positive we saw was the ability to decrease some wastage, as each box has the right portions of all ingredients for the meals. No more having to buy a whole bunch of something, they've only given you what you need.

We enjoyed our box so much that the next week we ordered and paid for our own. Whilst I haven't written up the outcomes of this box, it was very similar. Great meals, lots of variety, easy to cook. Since then we've encouraged our families to try the boxes out and they had very similar opinions, and continue to order the boxes when it suits them now. Amanda, another OTCB member, orders the boxes from time to time, and is a huge fan also.

The HelloFresh service suits many people, busy families, professional couples that are busy working, or even someone cooking for one. If you can see yourself trying out different meals, using a box of ingredients that are delivered to your door, then the HelloFresh service is something you should definitely try.
