Quick Chop! The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms

The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms - 103 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville SA 5081

I had noticed The Old Curiosity Shop and Tea Rooms (OCS & TR) pop up on Walkerville Terrace recently, so when a friend said she wanted to take me there for an afternoon tea birthday celebration I was intrigued or shall I say curious?!  The OCS & TR opened in October 2014 and serves savoury lunch items, cakes, teas, coffees and if you book ahead a traditional high tea service.

On arrival we are greeted by a lovely smiling server and escorted to a table in the room we have entered through.  I believe the establishment was once someone's house as there are multiple separate dining rooms, with the main room housing a counter and window display of cakes.  OCS & TR is decorated in an old worldly and charming manner and reminds me of my grandma's house that is similarly adorned with antiques and lots of lace!

I decide to try the freshly baked 'Orange and Poppy Seed Syrup Cake' as I'm informed the oranges used in this cake came from the orange tree in the backyard.  There is so much to look at while sitting at the quaint wooden table, dressed with an elegant lace tablecloth and topped with pretty floral tea sets.  It feels like you have just popped into an old friend's house for a cup of tea as the atmosphere is so warm, cosy and comfortable you could just stay all afternoon long.

The generous serve of cake is soft, fresh and full of great orange flavour.  The creamy icing is whipped perfectly and the addititon of the small chocolate balls on top adds an exciting crunch and bitterness to the cake.  My peppermint tea is fit for a queen served in a large tea pot that I pour into my tea cup through my pretty tea strainer.  My friend ordered the scones, jam and cream and this is presented on a cute little two tiered cake stand.  We got consumed in conversation so by the time she cut one open the scones were cold... or were they cold to start with?  We are not sure but hopefully they are served warm as cold scones are one of my pet hates!

Overall I loved my afternoon at the OCS & TR and will definitely return with the girls to enjoy an afternoon of traditional high tea service that is prepared fresh on the day.
