Seven Stars - Is it a shining star?

OTCB were invited to try the Seven Stars menu. All food was provided on behalf of the Seven Stars Hotel.

We all work in the city and are always on the lookout for somewhere new to try. When the Seven Stars asked if we would like to check out their menu, we jumped at the chance to catchup and try the food.

The menu is a good size, with a mix of pub favourites, a seasonal menu, and some a la carte meals that we chose to try. We liked the sound of the a la carte selections, and were also guided to a few by our friendly barman Ben. We ended up choosing to all share the Gnocchi with Chicken Ragout, Spicy American Pork Ribs and the Crispy Skinned Duck Breast. We felt this showed us a range of what could be delivered and a few different meats and flavours for us to try.

Gnocchi with Chicken Ragout - $23
The Gnocchi with Chicken Ragout looks great on the plate, lots of gnocchi piled high and a very generous serving of the sauce. The gnocchi are springy with a good dense texture and cooked as we expected they should be. The ragout sauce is fresh, with a nice tomato flavour. The shredded slow cooked chicken breast is surprisingly not dry, and adds great texture to the dish. The bocconcini added some creaminess to the dish. We all enjoyed the dish but felt the sauce was missing an extra element.  Maybe the addition of some fresh basil would give the dish that little something it was missing.

Spicy American Pork Ribs - $28
When we chose this dish, we expected some smoky, tender pork ribs, with a punchy sauce. And that's exactly what we got! The ribs were delivered as they should be, came off the bone with relative ease, and were meaty and well trimmed. The surprise of the dish for us were the tuscan style potatoes, crunchy and well seasoned, they matched well with the sticky, sweeter flavours of the pork ribs. The outlier of the dish here was the bok choy. Whilst we can understand the sauce has Asian flavours, we just didn't feel the bok choy belonged.  We thought a coleslaw or mac n cheese would work better with the ribs.

Crispy Skinned Duck Breast - $28
Our last main meal was the Duck Breast. The Duck was cooked medium and the skin was a little crispy. The breast was nice, and matched well with the flavours in the quinoa salad. It was finished with a red current jus, that did well to tie the dish together. We all enjoyed the dish, and made the comment that it was well balanced.

Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - $8
We were all pretty satisfied with the lunch meals, but we were all tempted by the dessert menu. We decided again to share something, and decided the chocolate brownie sounded delicious. And that it was! The brownie had a very 'pudding' like texture and was rich, gooey and chocolaty. The vanilla bean ice cream was a great pairing, and the tart berries added some tartness that balanced the richness out. A definite winner for us, and we all commented that for $8, it was great value and something we would return for.

The service was great, and the delivery of the dishes was prompt with all being delivered at the same time. The Seven Stars is a location that we all hadn't tried before, but all agreed we would return to. The menu suits a lot of different tastes, would suit small or large groups and would be a great option for a team or office lunch.
