Quick Chop - Bombolo's Pizzateca

Bombolo's Pizzateca - 44-46 O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, SA, 5000

I (Mirko) have to drive through O'Connell Street every morning to get to work, and as a result, always see Bombolo's Pizzateca as part of my travels. Amanda and I recently visited to try out the pizzas that they have on offer.

Looking at the menu, there are a number of different pizzas that catch our eye, so we ask whether we can order two pizzas (each half and half) allowing us to order four different flavours in total. Bombolo's is happy to accommodate without any extra charge.

In total, we order the following pizzas:
  1. Margherita - tomato, fior di latte, oregano, parmesan, basil & olive oil
  2. Capriciossa - tomato fior di latte, ham, mushrooms, artichokes & olives
  3. Funghi - tomato, fior di latte, mushroom, garlic & herbs
  4. Mt Vesuvius - tomato, fior di latte, pancetta, salame, roasted capsicum, olives & chilli
Overall, we weren't too excited with the pizzas that were provided. The bases lacked the thinness of some other pizzas and one was a little doughy. The flavours were very similar which could have been due to the use of the same dried herbs on each pizza. We believe the flavours of the pizza could have been improved with the use of some fresh herbs. We are also big fans of the smokey flavours from a wood fired pizza oven and noticed it's absence here with the use of a standard pizza oven.

One of our pizzas came out with the wrong ingredients and we flagged this with our waiter. The staff were very accommodating of this and provided us with a new pizza as well as a dessert - all at no additional cost. This shows the quality of their customer service and was great to see.

Overall, as much as we appreciated the quality service, it is our opinion that there are other pizzatecas around Adelaide with pizzas we prefer (think Pizza e Mozzarella, Antica, Etica and Est) which are in a similar price range but with that melt in your mouth experience.
