Hopes and Beans - Menu Tasting

Hopes and Beans - 190 Payneham Road, Evandale SA 5069

On The Chopping Board (OTCB) were kindly invited to Hopes and Beans (H&B) for brunch. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of H&B. Hopes and Beans is somewhere I (Amanda) pass by almost every day but have not ever had the time to pop in. When the new recent owners invited us to stop in for a meal I was excited to check it out, as I'm always on the hunt for a new brunch/lunch place to try.

Coffee & Peppermint Tea
To begin, Jess ordered a latte using Kommon Grounds beans and I, a peppermint tea as I only drink my coffee with almond milk and this is not available. Currently H&B are only licensed for 20 people so the tables are spread throughout the cafe in a roomy fashion, which is nice for a change compared to some of the other popular cafes that pack you in nice and tight. Very simply decorated with some nice pops of colour, there is even a small children's area with a small table and a box of toys to keep them entertained.

Brad's Benny $13.90
We select the 'Brad's Benny' to share which consists of bacon, sauteed mushrooms, two soft poached eggs topped with house made hollandaise on a slice of turkish bread. Overall an enjoyable dish and an interesting flavour twist with the spray of sticky balsamic vinegar across the base of the plate. The sweetness of the vinegar worked really well with the saltiness of the bacon to balance out the dish.  The poached eggs were cooked well with a soft gooey yolk oozing out when cut. The only thing I would have preferred is maybe the use of a freshly baked sourdough bread. I found the turkish bread to be quite hard and difficult to cut with my knife and fork. The owner does mention that their goal is to begin making bread on site but as they have only recently taken over, this will be something they will work towards. Freshly made bread sounds like a great idea to me!

Burger 190 $14.90
We are then brought out one of the most popular dishes ordered at H&B, the Burger 190 which consists of a pork and beef patty with bacon, cheese, a fried egg, caramelised onions, tomatoes and lettuce topped with house made relish and aioli and served with a potato salad. From the ingredient list we can see why this is a popular choice. All the good hearty ingredients that should be in every burger! We cut the burger in half and notice the patty is cooked all the way through.  We do prefer our patties to have a nice mild pink centre but that is just our personal preference.

Taking a bite the burger has good flavour with the combination of the sweetness of the caramelised onion, the selection of sauces and gooey egg yolk, melted cheese, salty bacon and freshness from the tomato and lettuce. If anything can be improved it would be the bread bun. Again a nice fresh sourdough or even brioche bun would have taken this burger to a whole other level as the supermarket, low quality bun used here really didn't do the burger any justice. I thought the potato salad was a nice point of difference to the everyday fries but Jess did not agree, as she would have preferred fries with this burger as she is not a potato salad fan.

Granola Slice
To finish we are brought a new sweet creation of the week, a healthy vegan granola slice. It was quite large in size so great to share between the two of us. We enjoyed this slice as it was sweet, chewy and chocolatey in every bite! A great way to end our meal at H&B.

Overall we enjoyed our brunch at H&B and with a few improvements it could be a handy local brunch/lunch place to pop in for a freshly made wholesome meal.
