Juniper - Knows the importance of pickles!

Juniper - 385 Magill Road, St Morris, SA 5000

When I (Amanda) heard that a new cafe had opened a couple of doors down from The Little Eastern (TLE), I thought two things: one, smart move because TLE is always so hard to get into, that now when TLE is full there is an alternative location to dine at without having to get back into the car.  My other thought was wow they are game opening up next to TLE which is hard to fault (read my TLE review here).  But then I find out that Juniper takes bookings and so they score points before I even arrive for this convenience!

Arriving on a Saturday morning, the small cafe has a new, neat and modern interior.  My friends and I peruse the menu and decide that there really is only one thing we would order - the 'Croque Monsieur' using rye with fontina, smoked kasher and Dutch mustard.  Other items on the menu included a couple light choices such as granola with fruit and yoghurt, rye toast with a choice of spreads, a cinnamon and raisin risotto or a couple of egg choices with some unusual pairings of cured ocean trout and blood sausage.

We order drinks; a couple of juices (not freshly made on site) and a peppermint tea.  I try for a latte with almond milk first but they do not have almond milk available, only soy.  Our meals and drinks are provided before we know it and we lick our lips at the sight of the three cheesy Croque Monsieurs placed in front of us.  And look there are pickles on the side salad!  Perfect for me the pickle addict!

Croque Monsieur $13.90

It is a good sized sandwich with lovely thick slices of a light rye bread topped in a generous layer of melted fontina cheese, a drizzle of mustard and nicely peppered.  Carving through the middle there is a thick slice of kasher (which we are informed is a type of bacon) with more cheese and mustard inside.  The bread centre soft with a good crust holding that cheese well.  I haven't had many Croque Monsieurs in my time so I don't have a lot to compare it to but this one was absolutely delicious!  So if there is a better one out there then please let me know!  What I was most impressed with is that the little side salad of radicchio and cos lettuce with pickles was dressed and seasoned so well that it was a great accompaniment to the richness of the cheesy sandwich.  I find I leave most side salads behind because they are wilted and tasteless but this one was excellent.  I definitely hope this item remains on the menu.

Before our breakfast we were eyeing off the Abbots and Kinney pastries on the counter but we were too full to proceed so we had to miss out on those this time.  We pay the bill at the counter (no split bills) and head off to start the day happy and very content!  Juniper will be a great addition to the neighbourhood and I look forward to checking out their dinner menu next time.
