Nonna and I - Menu Tasting

Nonna and I - 1A Margaret Street, Norwood SA 5067

Our team at On the Chopping Board (OTCB) had the pleasure of attending a special four course degustation at the brand new Italian restaurant to grace the streets of Norwood – ‘Nonna and I’. All food and drinks were provided by Nonna and I. Pricing for dishes has been provided where it was available at the time of the review.

Owner and head chef Khalil Rashwan personally greeted us on the evening, engaging with us his obvious love for cooking Italian food and his restaurateur philosophy to ‘come hungry and leave happy'. Whilst this is Chef Khalil’s first ‘Nonna and I’ in Australia, he has opened other franchises in both New York and Malaysia, as well as starring in his own continuing TV show ‘Habibi in the Kitchen’, making him a celebrity in his own right. The energetic and passionate chef also holds an honours degree in European Culinary Arts from the International Hotel Management Institute in Switzerland. Yet it was the reputation of South Australia’s renowned food culture that prompted Khalil to open an Adelaide-based Nonna and I, and we are sure glad he did.

Mozzarella & Tomato - $9.00
Once we had all been welcomed, the mangiare (eating!) commenced. The first dish to be presented was antipasto; a simple, classic combination of slices of fresh mozzarella and tomato, topped with fresh basil leaves and drizzled with a house-made olive oil and vinegar dressing (available for retail purchase). Being a typical warm summery evening, this dish was a great fresh opening to the meal, and paired well with the 2013 Rocco Ventosa Pinot Grigio from Abruzze in Italy.

Portobello Parmigiano - $9.00

Vongole (Clams) - $11.00
The next dish to follow was a choice between two beautiful warm appetisers. The first on offer was Portobello Parmigiano, a portobello mushroom seasoned with oregano, basil and roasted garlic served with Napoletana sauce and Mozzarella cheese. The second choice was steamed vongole, which are little clams tossed in olive oil, garlic and white wine. Being somewhat funghi-averse foodies, we chose the steamed vongole (clams), which were cooked to be beautiful and tender, although we agreed the garlic may have been a little heavy-handed.

Chicken, roast capsicum, peas with a cognac sauce on capellini

For main, there was a choice of veal or chicken (we had one of each) with prawns, served in a deliciously rich and creamy cognac sauce with roasted red capsicum and peas on a bed of capellini, or angels hair pasta. The texture and flavour of the sauce and the capellini was beautiful and these balanced well with each other, and were topped with generous serves of the other ingredients. Again, this was complimented well with a 2012 Rocco Ventosa Sangiovese from Abruzze.

Creme Caramel

Tiramisu
We were treated to another conversation from Chef Khalil, as we ate our way through the menu, and asked us personally for our opinions of the flavours thus far. Dessert was soon served, ‘a sweet ending to your day,’ and we were presented with a choice of either a crème caramel or tiramisu. Both made in-house. The crème caramel was sweet and had an enjoyable creamy texture without being overly gelatinous. The tiramisu was generously served, and encompassed just the right amount of coffee, cream and sponge.

Chef Khalil
Following the generous meal, we were treated to a tour of ‘Pizza Art & I,’ the co-located take-away and delivery pizza ‘grandchild’ of Nonna and I. The excited Chef Khalil also told us the pizza area is where another food series for YouTube will be filmed… stay tuned! With all of the passion and experience he brought to this night, we look forward to see what ‘Nonna and I’ will bring to the Italian scene in Norwood.
