The Moseley - New Summer Menu & Cocktails

The Moseley - 11 Moseley Square, Glenelg SA 5045

On The Chopping Board (OTCB) were kindly invited to The Moseley for a tasting of their new summer menu and cocktails.  All food and beverages were provided on behalf of The Moseley.  After visiting The Moseley in July 2015 to try their winter menu, which we thoroughly enjoyed, we were excited to return to try what was on offer this summer.

Cocktail Time!
Beef Tartare
Pork & Lamb Terrine
Frittata & Tomato Consomme
On arrival we were whisked away to the foreshore as The Moseley had set up a cocktail bar on the beach!  We were provided with thongs to pop on so we didn't sink into the sand in our heels and we were lucky enough to spend the next 1.5 hours sipping cocktails from coconuts and dining on canapes while watching the sunset.  We were treated to four different canapes on the beach including asparagus and zucchini frittata, tomato consomme with diced prawn, lamb and pork terrine with apple jam and beef tartare.  Amanda's favourite was the tomato consomme with diced prawns which was cold, fresh and had a nice amount of acidity that was lovely and refreshing on this hot summer night.

Kingfish Ceviche - $18
After the beachtime fun and a handful of Pimms cups we headed back inside The Moseley to begin our three course meal.  We started with the Hiramasa kingfish ceviche with a grapefruit and beetroot dressing and parsley oil.  We think there is nothing better than a freshly prepared fish ceviche for the summer months so we were excited for this dish but unfortunately it let us down. The kingfish was sliced so thinly that the slices basically disintegrated in our mouths. Either the grapefruit wasn't very tart, or present but it didn't have that flavoursome refreshing zing we were looking for.

Pressed Barossa Chicken - $28
For main course we were presented with a pressed Barossa Chicken, duck dumplings, apricot puree and orange sauce.  We were served a version of this pressed chicken when we sampled the winter menu and we enjoyed this dish very much as it was served in a lovely tasty broth rather than the apricot puree and orange sauce that was given this time. Overall it was a good dish, the chicken was moist, the apricot puree thick, smooth and sweet and the dumplings firm with a moreish soy flavour.  Our only concern while eating this dish was that it was too heavy for a summer dish.

I (Amanda) thought there was too much meat on the plate with the chicken and the duck and no real freshness to cut through this meaty richness.  I would have liked to have seen a refreshing cabbage style salad on the side which would have helped make this tasty dish more summer appropriate.

I (Camellia), felt that so far the evening had been a very meaty one, something that I personally favour less in the summer months. Each dish was very nice, removed from the situation. But after baking in the evening sun, all I wanted was a big icy drink and a light refreshing meal, which I definitely didn't get. Instead I left feeling heavy and protein enriched.

Dessert Tasting Plate
For dessert we are presented with a 'Dessert Tasting Plate' which included small samples of the following desserts; raspberry and rosewater cheesecake with macadamia and sable crumb, blackberry bombe Alaska with blackberry parfait, meringue and mango sponge, and a chocolate brownie with almond meringue and orange.  Amanda's favourite was the chocolate brownie as it was moist and rich in chocolate flavour and complimented well with the chewy almond meringue. Overall the desserts were pleasant and very visually appealing, but nothing to write home about.

Sunset at Glenelg
All in all, we had an enjoyable night at The Moseley, especially with the surprise cocktails and canap├ęs on the beach.  We appreciate the thought that has gone into this summer menu, especially the cocktails which were all fruity, fun and refreshing but the ingredient combinations and delivery just let it down a little this time compared to the winning winter menu. We look forward to what winter 2016 will bring!
