The Little Eastern - North Eastern Delights

The Little Eastern - 389 Magill Road, St Morris SA 5068

A spot of sunshine on Magill road with bright yellow decals on the shop front that can’t be missed. This delightful café offers crowd favourites with brunch and lunch menu items such as poached eggs, smashed avocado and a selection of Middle Eastern dishes hard to resist.  Read about our first visit here.

On this particular Sunday morning, after an eventful hike at nearby Morialta Park with two of my friends, we found ourselves feeling energetic, a little sore in the legs and famished! To The Little Eastern we go. On arrival, we were relieved to find that the often full café was near empty and we were offered a table by the front door, near the bright yellow coffee machine. The lovely lady who greeted us, put a glass of crayons for doodling and menus for perusing as well as water to refresh us after our outdoor adventures.

Our breakfast spread!
The menu had a great variety of dishes for any and every state of hunger and fancy, and so, after much deliberation, I (Sofia) settled on Baked Eggs in a capsicum salsa and sujuk (Turkish sausage) with organic sourdough bread and a serve of haloumi on the side. While my friends had the Lebanese Breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs with Turkish sausage, labne (strained yoghurt), olives, fresh tomatoes, cucumber and organic Turkish bread. As well as the Smashed Pumpkin which consisted of roasted pumpkin, Danish feta and chunky tomato salsa, garnished with roasted almonds and olive oil, served on organic sourdough.

We also couldn’t go past the fresh juices on the drinks menu and selected the Immunity Booster which had beetroot, celery, apple and fresh ginger. This juice has an interestingly refreshing taste, quite similar to beetroot dip, with a good kick of ginger and the fresh taste of celery.

Baked Eggs $14.50
Digging into my dish of baked eggs and Turkish sausage I was very happy with my choice and did not experience food envy of my companions. The haloumi cheese was fresh, soft, and fried right that it was absolutely delectable and paired well with the fresh crusty sourdough. The baked egg dish, while flavoursome, was somewhat heavy on salt and spices, and the addition of the sausage made this dish a little too salty for my liking. It helped that the yolk of the egg was runny and I could mix it into the rest of the dish to dull down the intensity of the spices.

My companions were both equally as pleased with their selections and happily tucked into their meals with much gusto that only a long hike and an encounter with a snake can induce. The plates were all cleaned up and we sat in a happy post-food stupor contemplating taking a nap at the café.

This is a place we would definitely come back to for the other menu items and to try the much talked about Manoushi dishes. We all felt that the food was great value for money, delicious, fresh and very filling. The service was friendly and accommodating and we felt very welcome and content to stay and draw on the paper table cloths.

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: Quite a few choices including the smashed avo and smashed pumpkin.
Child Friendly: Toast and eggs are available and the kids will be entertained drawing on the paper table cloths. High Chairs available.

Ambience: 4/5 - Warm and welcoming, with customers’ drawings put up on the wall.
Service: 4/5 - Friendly and accommodating.
Food: 8.5/10 - Filling, delicious and enjoyable.

In total OTCB gives The Little Eastern 16.5/20 chops on The Chopping Board.
