Local Crowd - Not a Crowd Favourite Just Yet

Local Crowd - 14 The Strand, Colonel Light Gardens SA 5041

Having been a massive fan of the previous establishment, The Stranded Store, in the same location, (review here), I (Amanda) was eager to try Local Crowd to see if it could possibly match the ever so high standards set by the previous owner. Arriving for a Tuesday lunch, we are seated inside and made the tough decision of whether to select something from the all day breakfast menu or the lunch menu. I toss back and forth over a couple of options and when the server returns to take our order I make a split second decision to order the prawns from the lunch menu. My mum orders from the all day breakfast menu.

Seared King Prawns $25.90
After a small wait our dishes arrive. My seared King Prawns are served with kipfler potatoes, green beans, zucchini, olives and saffron. On first glance, it doesn't look too bad. I'm not too convinced about the presentation of the squiggle of some sort of thick creamy yellow dressing on the bottom of the blue plate but I get stuck in. Unfortunately this dish did not hit the mark for me. The prawns were soft and mushy and the green beans were not green at all... more of a grey colour that were limp and tasteless to the point that I had to scrape them to the side of the plate. A few days too old maybe? The rest of the dish was pleasant, with nice big slices of zucchini, sweet cherry tomatoes, fresh rocket and kipfler potatoes with a nice crisp outer. The dressing which I assume contained the saffron tasted very similar to a McDonald's Big Mac sauce (believe it or not!) which was all too strange for me when pairing it with the salad ingredients. Overall a disappointing dish which I was really wishing to be spectacular.

Soft Poached Eggs $18.90
My mum's soft poached eggs with avocado, pecorino, asparagus, lemon, baby herbs and toasted sourdough was a completely different story. Now this is more of the standard that I was expecting. Perfectly soft poached eggs with an oozy yolk, the asparagus fresh and crunchy, vibrant herbs throughout, acidity from the lemon and even the surprise addition of radish making for a fresh and delicious dish. The generous shavings of pecorino on top added that moreish quality to the dish and the sourdough lovely and toasted upholding all the toppings well by retaining firmness.

A lovely dish that she would order again. Consequently, we were a split crowd on this lunch time visit. We are big fans of the work the new Local Crowd owners delivered while at the Corner Store in Dulwich so we know they can succeed. Maybe just a one off dish on an off day is what I'll put it down to. Hopefully my next visit will blow me away and remind me of the flawless experience I encountered when it was once the Stranded Store.
