Abbots & Kinney - Abbots Addict

Abbots and Kinney - 78 Pirie Street, Adelaide SA 5000

Hello, my name is Amanda and I am an Abbots addict! I've only recently realised I've never reviewed Abbots and Kinney (A&K), conveniently located nearby my workplace in the Adelaide CBD and thought it was time to share my addiction with the world. And it appears I'm not on my own, with A&K having just won "Best new restaurant or cafe" in the 2016 City Awards.

The luring cabinet of pastries!
I'm not going to go into too much detail but I do have lots of mouth-watering photos to share with you due to the many visits I've made since it's opening in 2015. I admit I visit A&K one, two, three, maybe four times a month for a pastry, coffee, breakfast or lunch fix... so many reasons to go... so many reasons to return... I cannot stay away, as much as those tighter than usual work pants tell me to! From the super cool interior, to the friendly smiling faces, cool beats and freshly baking aromas, I am joyfully intoxicated every time I enter A&K.

A&K updates the breakfast and lunch menu monthly which is another reason I'm lured in so often. As well as those tantalising social media posts of freshly baked doughnuts they conveniently publish just as I'm reaching for my healthy piece of fruit... but I'm sure a creme brulee doughnut smothered in toffee contains the same amount of nutrition levels, right?!

Eggplant Parmigiana with Buffalo Mozzarella Sandwich and Salad $13
A&K are also running a weekly free lunch and coffee promotion which you are entered into when you sign up for their mailing list. Each week I eagerly await the 'Lunch on Us' email like an addict waiting for their next fix... surely one day my dreams will come true!

Below are my A&K highlights... or rather my confessional in photo form:

abbots and kinney, adelaide, cbd, pastries, danishes, cakes, sweets, desserts, savoury, pirie street, bakery, patisserie
Mushroom & Walnut Danish, Toffee Apple Pastry & Coffee
You can never go wrong with a little breakfast savoury pastry and coffee before work... and oh whoops looks like a little sweet pastry slipped in there too ;)

Danwich $13
Danwich fillings change monthly. This one from February 2016, a flaky danish pastry filled with house baked beans, avocado, soft boiled egg, pangrattatto and salted ricotta with side salad hit all the right places.

Bastone $13
This Bastone also from February 2016 with corned beef, Emmental cheese, sauerkraut, dill, pickles and Russian dressing had me declaring "best sandwich ever" on Instagram during one of my intoxicated moments! But really that corned beef though, all thick and luscious, with melted Emmental cheese and tangy sauerkraut had me in all sorts of dizzy ways! Please bring this one back A&K!

A sweet praline pastry on the run! $5
Danwich $13
This Danwich from March 2016, currently available on the June 2016 menu is a flaky pastry filled with sauteed mushrooms, spinach and smoked mozzarella. A great take on a toasted sandwich but with all the goodness from a buttery flaky pastry and a point of difference with the smokey flavours from the melted stretchy mozzarella.

Raspberry (front) and Lemon Doughnuts $5 each
Creme Brulee Doughnuts $5 each
These were the mother of all doughnuts with the sticky-icky toffee encasing this freshly baked doughnut filled with a stunning vanilla bean cream concoction inside. I couldn't mask the ooohs and ahhhs coming from my work desk that day!

Danwich $13
Another day another Danwich, this time a puffed up flaky pastry filled with chorizo, tomato and manchego and topped with a soft boiled egg. This had all the right warming flavours and spicy kick for the middle of autumn.

The Miss Piggy (front) & Danish Hartlett (back) $13 each
From the May 2016 menu, I polished off this generous serve of slow cooked pork shoulder in toasted house made bread, while my friend had the pastry filled with maple bacon, guacamole and soft boiled egg. Yes you heard right... maple bacon... yum!

Breakfast Danish $9 & Latte $4
My most recent visit, June 2016 was to check out their current breakfast menu. This one named 'Smokey and the Bandit' was a flaky pastry topped with smoked pancetta, baked beans, feta and a soft boiled egg. They definitely have their soft boiled eggs down! The house made baked beans were delicious with a good hit of spice which was balanced out with the creamy feta crumbled throughout. I spy pickles... yes pickles at breakfast time makes everything that much better!

Gianduia Rocher & Lemon Curd Doughnuts $5 each
So in a nutshell, if you haven't visited A&K before then I'd strongly recommend it... although please don't take that last Gianduia Rocher doughnut because there is a good chance I'm on my way.
