Farina 00 Pasta & Wine Bar - All hail the house made pasta!

Farina 00 Pasta & Wine Bar - 128 King William Road, Goodwood SA 5034

I (Amanda) love a good Saturday lunch outing and once I heard there was a new pasta place on the scene I gathered a couple of my nearest and dearest and made a reservation for Farina 00 Pasta and Wine Bar via Facebook Messenger, how convenient! Arriving on a cold but sunny Winter's day we locate Farina only a few doors down from two well established Italian restaurants in Parisi's and Antica. Brave is my initial thought when considering the regular clientele and consistency I've always found at Parisi's and Antica.

We are seated at our table and take a look at our surroundings. Tables and chairs appear new and are lovely and comfortable and the walls with a fresh coat of paint but the rest of the decor gives a cold, bare feeling with the old mis-matched tiles which would really benefit from being replaced with something more modern, clean and consistent throughout the establishment. I think pasta and wine deserves to be eaten in cosy and comfortable surroundings.

Complimentary Focaccia Bread
Once our orders are taken we are presented with a complimentary board of focaccia bread with pesto drizzled on top. A lovely gesture which we would have enjoyed even more if it was served warm. Served cold we found the bread to be a little dry.

Gigli Pasta $29
Today we skip the entrees and get straight into the pasta because this is why we are here... to try the fresh house made pasta. I decide on the 'Gigli' a bowlful of very pretty, frilly horn like shaped pasta with porcini, king oyster and shiitake mushrooms, truffle oil, thyme, dash of cream and grated truffle cheese. Two of the three pasta dishes arrive and we wait another 5 minutes before the third bowl arrives. Consequently our first two bowls of pasta are pretty much cold with only a little warmth from the bottom centre of the dish. The third bowl of pasta on the other hand arrives piping hot. None the less we mix everything around to find that the pasta has been cooked to a lovely al dente. Mushrooms and truffles are two of my favourite things and combined with pasta they make me very happy indeed. Lightly coated in cream and truffle oil, most of the moisture comes from the mushrooms and melted grated truffle cheese. Overall a winning ingredient combination and well made pasta.

Reginette $26
My mum decides on the 'Reginette' consisting of oven baked market vegetables including beetroot, butternut pumpkin, broccoli, tomato and spinach with a curly fettucini shaped pasta. Apart from also being served quite cold my mum enjoyed the generous serve of largely cut vegetables in her well cooked al dente pasta. With only a little olive oil to bring the vegetables and pasta together, this dish was simple but enjoyable.

Ravioli $26
My friend ordered the 'Ravioli' filled with zucchini, cow's milk ricotta, mint and served with a burnt butter sauce. Large rounds of ravioli filled with a creamy ricotta filling was everything you would expect from a pasta dish full of cheese and butter... yum! The mint and zucchini doing a great job of bringing some freshness to all the creaminess. A great pasta dish for today's cool weather.

Caprese Salad $12
To break up our heavy pasta dishes further we order the 'Caprese Salad' consisting of buffalo mozzarella, Fleurieu Peninsula extra virgin olive oil, basil and heirloom tomatoes. A great dish that refreshed and revitalised our palates throughout and after our pastas. Fresh ingredients and an ever reliable winning ingredient combination, we all enjoyed this salad.

Nutella Semifreddo $12
Not wanting to overindulge we decide to share the 'Nutella Semifreddo' served with Haigh's hazelnuts. A few ooohs and ahhhs as it arrives, I do wonder if I'm going to get my fair share of this delicious looking dessert! The semifreddo served in a glass is creamy and has a distinctive nutella flavour which we are very happy about. A dessert spoon full of nutella sits on the side of the plate and is an extra indulgent way to enjoy when combined with the semifreddo. I was expecting some whole hazelnuts to be served with the dessert but instead one halved pistachio today which I found odd when hazelnuts were mentioned on the menu. I would have loved some crushed or whole hazelnuts to be included to provide a textural element but overall a very delicious dessert.

On receiving the bill the waitress informs that she has amended the bill to reflect a lunch special which includes a bowl of pasta and the glass of wine I ordered for $25. Well that sounds like a good deal! But when I question if the same has been applied to my friend's bowl of pasta and glass of wine we are informed my friend's glass of wine is not included in the lunch special. Interesting, as the lunch special was not disclosed at the time of ordering. We definitely would have appreciated this information at the time of ordering so we could have all decided if we would like to take up this great offer.

Farina Interior
Overall, we enjoyed the food today. Would I rush back... maybe not but I would love to hear if anyone else has visited Farina as yet and what their experience was. Like any new restaurant there is always going to be an adjustment period to get into the swing of things. I think with a little more attention to timing of dishes, service details and the addition of some inviting decor, Farina could match their successfully running neighbours. We wish them all the best as their pasta really is very good.

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: A couple of vegetarian entrees and pastas.
Child Friendly: No specific kids menu.

Ambiance: 2.5/5 - Quiet today and a little cold in temperature and decor.
Service: 3/5 - If only we were told about the lunch special upfront but overall friendly table service.
Food: 7/10 - Good food and with some further attention to timing of dishes could be great.

In total OTCB gives Farina 00 Pasta and Wine Bar 12.5/20 chops on The Chopping Board.
