Pershing Square - 90 E 42nd Street, NYC, 10017
Pershing Square is located just outside of Grand Central Station on 42nd Street under the Park Avenue Viaduct. Upon entering, I am greeted with a bright and cheerful interior and quite a large dining area, not something that I was expecting when walking through those doors.I (Mirko) arrive on a Sunday afternoon for brunch and not really feeling like something savoury, opt for something that caters more to my sweet tooth. So I order a latte and waffles with fresh strawberries.
Waffles and Strawberries - $16 |
Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie - $7.50 |
After brunch, we both felt like something a little sweet(er). Looking at the dessert menu, there are some items that are priced in the $3-4 range with others priced in the $7-8 range. Based on my estimates, I assumed that the lower priced items were more bite sized items with the higher priced being a little larger. So I opted for the higher priced chocolate peanut butter pie and a friend of mine opting for the smaller option.
When this dish came out, I was very surprised at the size! This could easily have been shared between the two of us. Looking at my friends tart, that was more the size I was expecting. I knew from the outset that I was not going to be able to finish this all.
The pie had a peanut butter ganache, chocolate mousse with roasted peanuts and caramel topped off with cream (because the rest wasn't rich enough!). Whilst the individual components of the pie were delicious (smooth, creamy peanut butter ganache, light and fluffy chocolate mousse and crunch from the peanuts), together it was too rich for my liking and was very sweet.
If I was to return on another occasion, I think that I would try some of their savoury brunch items and opt for a smaller dessert.
