Madame Hanoi - Hendrick's High Tea

Madame Hanoi - Adelaide Casino, North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000

On The Chopping Board (OTCB) was invited to the launch of Madame Hanoi's Hendrick's High Tea. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of Madame Hanoi, a restaurant within the Adelaide Casino.

We have been lucky to visit Madame Hanoi on a number of occasions, recently for a Bastille Day celebration and earlier in the year for their first birthday celebrations and a menu tasting (review here). Today we are here to try a French-Vietnamese high tea menu matched with a special pot of hot Hendrick's Gin Tea. I (Amanda) am a frequent high tea goer (see previous high tea reviews at Sean's Kitchen and the Mayflower) and was eager to see what Madame Hanoi had in store.

Eden Special Fizz Cocktail
Tonight Madame Hanoi is decorated in pretty, colourful artificial flowers throughout, a DJ providing some modern tunes and a drinks cart serving up 'Eden Special Fizz' cocktails consisting of a tipsy concoction of Hendrick's Gin, cherry and Prosecco.

High Tea Stand
A three tiered high tea stand is presented to the table and it is no ordinary tiered stand. Crafted with Madame Hanoi's signature serving ware, a fusion of Vietnamese and French plates, we start with the bottom (or third) tier. This tier consists of bite sized serves of grilled Tasmanian Salmon and mini Crispy Pork Banh Mi's. The salmon was presented atop a betel leaf and served with ginger and a hot pepper paste. The pepper paste was hot and spicy indeed and gave the lightly grilled salmon a great kick in flavour, while the betel leaf was fresh and provided a great textural element.

The pork Banh Mi was served as expected with pate, chilli and Asian basil and we were thrilled to get that super crunch from the pork crackling atop of the sliced tender pork belly. Definitely a contender for our favourite CBD banh mi's (see our banh mi roundup here).

Soft Shell Crab Sliders & Duck Cold Rolls
The middle (or second) tier consisted of duck cold rolls and soft shell crab sliders. The cold rolls were filled with a tasty confit duck, crunchy pickled vegetables and rice noodles. Fresh, light and easy to eat, tonight we are missing the dipping sauce but can only imagine how much tastier it would have been with a little hoisin on the side. The soft shell crab sliders were presented with a twist in squid ink brioche buns and were quite the favourite around the table. Lightly battered and with that crisp texture we look for, it was a joy to eat especially with the freshness of a sprig of coriander.

French Macarons & Coconut Tapioca
The top (or first) tier had the sweet elements of the high tea with assorted French macarons presented on top of little bowls of coconut tapioca with mango sugo, lemongrass, goji berry and dill.  A lovely way to finish the high tea, the vanilla macaron was easily detected thanks to a good dose of vanilla bean in the centre cream. The coconut tapioca, not something I would order if I was given the choice, was surprisingly delicious with the balance of sweet and savoury flavours and the soft and chewy textures. I began the coconut tapioca, thinking I would only have a taste, to finishing the bowl completely and even eyeing off another!

Hendrick's Gin Tea
Let us not forget the amazing hot pot of Hendrick's Gin Tea that was a perfect accompaniment to our high tea delicacies. Consisting of English breakfast tea, Hendrick's Gin, fresh lemon juice, cucumber, orange and spiced honey, it was easy to drink, fresh flavoured but with subtle spice, alcoholic tea, that had us wondering if it would be appropriate to serve this with breakfast also!

Madame's Hendrick's High Tea is $45 per person and is available from Monday to Friday between 12 and 5pm and on weekends between 2 and 5pm. It is recommended for a minimum of two people and bookings are essential. If you are looking for a high tea that is far from your traditional experience, or if you are a lover of Gin and/or Vietnamese flavours, then the Madame Hanoi Hendrick's High Tea is the perfect experience for you to try.
