Propaganda Club - Friday Night Drinks

Propaganda Club - 110 Grenfell Street, Adelaide SA 5000

Searching for a nice place to have a few drinks and a possible bite to eat one Friday night for a friend's birthday, I (Amanda) suggest trying the recently opened Propaganda Club. Not having visited before I wasn't sure what to expect and decided to email Propaganda to ensure the location would be suitable for a group of 30 'something' year old ladies to spend a night gossiping and sipping pretty cocktails. After some helpful advice from the 'Concierge' at Propaganda, we made a reservation for 12 people in the 'Soho Lounge'.

On arrival, we are welcomed at the top of a wide staircase and escorted downstairs to our reserved lounge area within the Soho Lounge. There are half a dozen open booth like lounges decked out in a luxurious pale blue velvet, opulent chandeliers, a sophisticated looking bar at the entrance to the lounge and an overall glamourous 'New York' style ambiance. You can catch a glimpse of the Manhattan Room encased in glass and wooden panelling separating it from the Soho Lounge. The Manhattan Room is where you can have a proper sit down dinner until the early hours of the morning.

Bitter Rose Spritz $18
To start the festivities I select a cocktail named the 'Bitter Rose Spritz', which is described in the menu as a spritz that prepares the stomach for the onset of food. Sounds like just what I need! This cocktail consisting of sparkling rose, sweet vermouth, amaro and soda is pretty to photograph and very easy to drink. It's not as bitter as I was expecting but rather a subtle sweetness prevails which is probably why it's so easy to drink. It really did live up to it's description as the next thing we are onto is ordering some bar snacks!

Grilled Haloumi Cheese $18
As we are not overly hungry, half the group order a few dishes to share between two or three people.  Firstly, the 'Grilled Haloumi Cheese'. This came with four slices of  La Vera (an Adelaide local... tick!) haloumi cheese served with a house tapenade and lemon flesh. Large thin slices of grilled goodness are topped with what appears to be an olive tapenade which we are informed has anchovies in it. They informed us of this detail when ordering and offered to make it without if required. How lovely! We are happy for the extra kick of saltiness from the anchovies, which works well when combined with the freshness and tang of the lemon flesh pieces sprinkled atop the soft cheese.

Croquettes $10
The 'Croquettes' are four rich and creamy mushroom pockets, herbed crumbed and served with a sweet tomato jam. These croquettes are creamy indeed! A favourite around the table, the contrast of the crispy outer crumb and the smooth, soft centre is a delight to devour. A subtle mushroom flavour, I was happy to eat these all on their own without dipping into the sweet tomato jam. The jam was quite chunky and needed to be eaten with a knife and fork with the croquette... no easy dipping here but I guess that forces proper lady dinner table etiquette in these plush surroundings!

Chips $10
Lastly we order a bowl of chips to help soak up the pending drinking night ahead. These beer battered chips coated in a creamed feta and oregano spice mix were delicious! I quite honestly could take or leave chips, they don't really do a lot for me (call me strange I know!) but these super crispy chips with their soft fluffy centre were spiced to a whole other level! The scatter of creamed feta throughout the bowl somehow held onto these chips well, along with the moreish flavours of the oregano spice mix we couldn't help ourselves from going back for more and more.

Service throughout the evening was friendly and welcoming and made you feel like nothing was too much trouble. We received table service for both food and drinks and our large group of 12 were able to pay with cash or credit card as we ordered, without having to move as far as just reaching for our purse! We were even allowed to split the food bill into 12 differing amounts... wow, how is that for service in this day and age where you often see the dreaded 'no split bills' at the bottom of the menu. This was particularly pleasing for our group as not everyone knew each other and made for a convenient and easy payment process, all without having to move from our comfy booth.

Soho Lounge
On this particular Friday night, the Soho Lounge was only half full, so some of the buzzing ambiance was missing but the soulful RnB beats playing in the background were a great choice. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Propaganda Club and look forward to returning to try some more cocktails or even to experience a proper sit down dinner in the Manhattan Room. I think this is a great venue for after work, late night, and everything in between for drinks and nibbles, especially for men in suits and ladies wanting to show off their new high heels in super stylish surroundings.  Cheers!

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: A great selection of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes clearly marked on the menu.
Child Friendly:  Leave the kids at home for this night out!

Ambiance: 4/5 - A wonderfully cosy but elegant vibe, fun background beats and ambient lighting.
Service: 4.5/5 - Fantastic service, friendly and only too happy to make your night the best it can be.
Food: 8.5/10 - Only tried 3 dishes this evening but they were all tasty and had me wanting to return to try more.
