Handsome and the Duchess - 16 McHenry Street, Adelaide SA 5000
Watching Handsome and the Duchess (H&D) evolve over the past 18 months since our first visit (March 2015 review - A Big Name To Live Up To), I (Amanda) decided it was time to give H&D another go for lunch. After the less than impressive Vietnamese beef salad I had on my first visit, I was keen to try something from the much larger menu now available. Not only has the menu expanded, so has the venue, with extra seating and now with table bookings available it makes a great option when catching up with friends or arranging business lunches or coffee dates. The coffee is still the great standard it was on our first visit and we are actually daily coffee takeaway regulars.Pulled Pork Sandwich $14.90 |
After a small mix up, my sandwich is eventually delivered to my table and it looks delicious. Generous amounts of filling make the thickly sliced sourdough sandwich impressive. Luckily it tastes as good as it looks! The BBQ pork is as tender as they promised and full of flavour and when paired with the sweetness of the pear make a wonderful combination, along with the freshness of the sprouts, rocket and basil. Crunch from the pecans and creaminess from the brie, bitterness from the fennel, all sounds like it could get a bit much but works to balance out the sandwich to make this a complete and fulfilling lunch.
I was very pleased with this recent visit and am glad I gave H&D another chance at lunch as they have made great improvements. It has helped to put my first visit out of mind and I look forward to returning more regularly in the future, to try further dishes and maybe even a cheeky house made cake or pastry or two.
