The Lab - perfect spot for your active wear

One lovely crisp Saturday Winter's morning Sofia and I (Amanda) decided to do something a little crazy and embark on a healthy walk at Morialta Falls before treating ourselves to breakfast at The Lab in our activewear!  We had been eyeing off The Lab since it opened a little while ago but it only recently opened for trading on a Saturday, which is a lot more convenient for us.

The Lab is situated on busy Payneham Road but has a handy carpark at the back of the building.  We were lucky to snag one of the last tables by the window and perused the short but sweet menu.  The Lab is small inside with only a half a dozen tables but it's got a neat, clean and modern interior with an open kitchen so you can watch your meal get made.  There is even a window with the periodic table on it so you can test your high school memory!

Almond Milk Latte $4

We started with a couple of almond milk coffees, a latte and a cappuccino.  We are very partial to the Almond Breeze Barista Blend brand of almond milk but at The Lab they use Pure Harvest.  It is not as thick and creamy as Almond Breeze and is not as deliciously subtle on the palate but the coffee beans used are good and not bitter and that chemistry lab beaker is the coolest thing we've seen coffee served in for awhile!

The Lab Big Brekky (front) $17
We decided to share our breakfast selections, to avoid any jealous stares across the table wishing for someone else's breakfast!  'The Lab Big Brekky' consisted of eggs cooked your way (we selected poached), bacon, roast tomato, mushrooms and baby spinach on toast.  Yes!  Every element on this plate was delicious.  The eggs poached perfectly so that when we cut through the egg, the yolk oozed out and we could mop it up with our toasted sourdough.  The mushrooms were juicy and had a very tasty seasoning of herbs.  The bacon tender with a prominent moreish smokey flavour hot off the grill.  The baby spinach fresh and flavoursome and the roasted tomato sweet and juicy.

The 'Mushrooms on Toast' consisted of mushrooms, fig and olive tapenade, sourdough toast, avocado and goats curd. The same flavoursome mushrooms from the big brekky were used in this dish but paired with three different elements in the sweet fig and olive tapenade, sharpness of the goats curd and creaminess of the avocado.  Another simple but tasty breakfast to fulfil us after an energetic morning.

Overall we enjoyed our breakfast at The Lab and would definitely keep it in mind next time we are in the area and are needing a quick and casual breakfast, brunch or lunch.

Ambiance: 3.5/5 - Casual and neat with large windows overlooking a busy main road brings in lots of great natural light.
Service: 4/5 - Order and pay at the counter with friendly service and prompt delivery of food.
Food: 8/10 - Concise menu with all your traditional breakfast needs satisfied
