Quick Chop! Black Dog Gallery

Black Dog Gallery - Shop 4/455 Greenhill Road, Tusmore SA 5065

Following Black Dog Gallery on Facebook since it opened in December 2015, I (Amanda) being the ramen lover I am, had been looking for an opportunity to visit and finally 9 months down the long, busy track I finally made it!  Visiting on a weekday while I was enjoying some well deserved annual leave, I am the one and only lucky customer for lunch.  The menu is divided into all day breakfast and brunch ramen, which is suitable for the 7:30am to 4pm daytime opening hours.

My order is taken and I await for my chosen 'Sapporo Miso Ramen' with an additional topping of 'Kimchi'.  I also order a Japanese Lemonade in preparation of cooling down my kimchi spicy palate. The lemonade is your typical artificial variety and I would probably try one of their speciality Japanese teas instead next time to be a little more on the healthier side.

Sapporo Miso Ramen $15.50
The ramen arrives and looks and smells good.  The miso broth is topped with Char-Sui pork (sliced slow roasted pork loin), Aji-Tarma (salted soft boiled egg), finely chopped spring onions, noodles and my additional pick of the Kimchi (Korean style pickled spicy cabbage).  My first sip of the broth and I am happy.  The depth of flavour in the broth is very moreish, not overly salty as some ramen can be and the balance of sweet and sour flavours is spot on.  The noodles are cooked to a wonderful al-dente and the soft boiled egg is exactly that, a creamy soft yolk. The kimchi is one of the best I've had in some time as it had great heat and acidity, so I was very glad I added this to the ramen.  The only improvement I believe this soup needed was with the pork.  It was sliced quite thin and was dry from overcooking.  It was missing the tender juiciness that I was looking for and maybe next time I would select the pulled pork mince to be on the safer side.

Japanese Lemonade
Overall a great experience at Black Dog Gallery and I'm excited to return soon with some of my ramen loving friends to try further items on the menu.  On exiting I notice a glass cabinet with house made cakes, including a delectable looking chocolate cake with glossy chocolate frosting... looks like I'll have to make room for dessert next time!
