NYC - Get your Greek on at Avlee Greek Kitchen

On The Chopping Board (OTCB) was invited to try some Greek delights at Avlee Greek Kitchen located in Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. All food was provided free of charge on behalf of Avlee.

Located on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, Avlee Greek Kitchen prides itself on the freshness of its dishes and supporting local farmers from which they source their produce. We were treated to a few of Avlee Greek Kitchen house specialities which we were more than happy to try.

Trio of Dips ($14 ), Saganaki ($10), Dolmathes ($10)
We started off the meal with a trio of dips which allows you three dips of your choosing. We opted for the Melitzanosalata (eggplant, bell peppers, jalapeño, parsley and garlic), Scordalia (potato and garlic) and the Taramasolata (Fish roe, onion) served with pita bread. All three dips were smooth in their texture. The Taramasolata was not as salty as I had previously had at other Greek eateries, the Scordalia was balanced in its flavour with the use of garlic being quiet restrained so as not to overpower the flavour of this dish. The Melitzanosalata was a dip that I had not previously had, and would have liked a little more heat through it. The pita was soft and warm and definitely a nice accompaniment to the desk.

After our dips, we ordered the Saganaki which is Kefalograviera cheese, pan fried with lemon. Saganaki and Haloumi are always favourites of mine when I visit any Greek restaurant and it always makes it on my plate....really....who doesn't like fried cheese?! Today, the cheese was fried with a nice, light, golden crust with a nice chewy interior. The squeeze of lemon added an acidity which finished off the dish well. To finish our appetizers, we ordered the Dolmathes, hand rolled grape leaves filled with rice, vegetables, herbs and spices. Whilst the filling was nicely cooked, these lacked a little seasoning in my opinion.

Pantzaria ($10 or $20) based on size
To add a little bit of green to our menu, we ordered the Pantzaria with roasted beets, baby kale, walnuts, feta and yogurt dressing. This was a nice light salad. The roasted beets added a sweet element to the dish with the walnut and grated cheese adding a different textural element. The addition of the yogurt dressing added some depth to this dish.

Mousaka ($16)
For our main we ordered the Mousaka. For those who have not had Mousaka previously, I liken it to a Greek version of lasagna. This Mousaka was made with zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, lamb, beef and a béchamel sauce. This dish had a nice flavour but I would have again preferred a little more seasoning. The Mousaka had a nice outer crust adding a nice contrast to the smooth béchamel and minced meat base.

Baklava ($5)
By this time, we were already full, but when presented with the option of dessert, we couldn't say no! Today's dessert was the Baklava. Thin sheets of filo pastry layered with a walnut and almond mixture and doused with a honey syrup. This is a very rich, decadent dish and definitely for those with a sweet tooth. For those who don't have such a sweet tooth, I would opt for another of the desserts. Ask the wait staff for their options and they will be glad to assist.

Overall, we had a nice experience at Avlee Greek Kitchen. Nice dishes, great ingredients at a reasonable price. An extensive menu makes this a great place to try out some Greek food.
