The Oxford Hotel - New Spring Menu

On The Chopping Board (OTCB) was invited to The Oxford Hotel to sample the new Spring menu. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of The Oxford Hotel.  Back in June 2016, we were invited to the relaunch party of The Oxford Hotel and fellow team member Sofia was impressed with the modern renovations and tasty canap├ęs served on the night.  As I (Amanda) missed the relaunch I was excited to visit one cool Spring evening for dinner.

Arriving on a Tuesday night I wasn't expecting to walk into a full and bustling restaurant, which made me think word had already gotten around about the fresh new things happening here and got me excited for what we were about to experience.  Ushered to our table for two by the large front bay window, we had a great view of busy O'Connell Street in North Adelaide.

We decided to begin the evening with a couple of cocktails.  I chose the 'Pillar's Garden', which consisted of Four Pillars Gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, mint and cucumber.  It was a refreshing cocktail with predominant flavours of cucumber and mint, which was very easy to drink.  My guest tonight enjoyed the 'Passionfruit Caprioska' which consisted of Stoli Vodka, Passionfruit Liqueur, lime and passionfruit, which again was easy to drink thanks to the super fruity and tartness from the passionfruit.  Overall she would have liked a little less ice so she could enjoy more of the cocktail.

The dinner menu is divided into 6 sections and covers quite the territory!  Starters/Share, Tynte Street (Asian dishes), Dirt Candy (Healthy dishes), Oxford Classics (Pub Classics), The Main Event (these main courses change seasonally) and Sides, all make for a menu to suit a diverse range of diets, cravings and trends.

Wicked & I'm Lazy Share Selection $35 & Zingy Wingys $12
Tonight the Head Chef took control and started our night with a 'Wicked and I'm Lazy Share Selection 15" Lazy Susan' with the addition of 'Zingy Wingys' which are crunchy lime and ginger chicken wings with a spicy green sambal dip. Wow!  What an impressive start it was to our dinner!  This platter was way above standard pub fare quality and the generous amount of food presented on this easy to spin lazy susan could have fed at least 4 people as a starter.  I also think this type of platter would be perfect to graze on with a bottle of wine on a lazy Sunday session with the sun beaming through the windows and some cool beats in the background.  The platter was filled with all the favourites in cheeses, cold meats, pickled octopus, smoked salmon, creamy thick beetroot dip and crackers, quince, cornichons, olives, chorizo, artichokes and dried and fresh fruit.  Everything was fresh, great quality and a food grazers dream!

The chicken wings had just the right amount of zing in order to live up to it's name but not overly hot and spicy that my non spice loving guest today could not eat them.   Juicy soft chicken coated in the crispy finger licking crumb was even more flavourful with the sambal dipping sauce, which had a slight sweetness that helped to balance out the spice.

Next we shared two new Spring inspired main course dishes.  The first was our choice of the 'Pulled Lamb Shoulder' with tabouli salad, kofta granola, spiced garlic sauce and pita bread.  It had all the makings of a do it yourself yiros on a plate.  It was a great dish to grab some warm pita bread, spoon on the garlic sauce, add a good portion of the pulled lamb and top with the tabouli, tomato and cucumber salad to make a fun, hands on and tasty dish.  Individually we would have liked a slightly thicker garlic sauce and maybe more of it to make it go further with the generous portion of the pulled lamb that was pressed into the shape of a big slice of bread.  The lamb itself was tender after a slow cooked process marinating in a selection of herbs and spices but overall needed a little more of a flavour lift when eating it on it's own.  The addition of extra seasoning and more of the meat juices poured on top would have taken the lamb to delectable heights.

The next main course was selected for us by the Head Chef, so talented in his diverse and ever changing seasonal menu, he presented a 'Grilled Lemon Mustard Chicken Breast' with a rocket, pear and hazelnut salad and OmNom dressing.  Chicken breast is a cut of meat I tend to not order out as it is an easy part of the chicken to over cook and thus when this dish arrived I thought it was quite risky and game of the chef to want this dish reviewed.  Luckily for all, including our stomachs, the chicken breast was cooked beautifully.  A lovely grilled outer and a tender moist chicken was the perfect Spring time dish paired with the freshness of the rocket and pear salad, crunch of the hazelnuts and super flavourful secret signature OmNom dressing.  Our favourite of the main course dishes.

Overall we had a pleasurable evening, with wonderful food, friendly service and an infectious ambiance that had us wanting to spend hours soaking it all in.  If you are looking for a casual but cool pub for a fun night out, check out the Oxford Hotel and start with one of those epic lazy share platters and try one of the seasonal Spring dishes before they are gone and Summer is here!
