De Bortoli Woodfired Experience

There’s often nothing better than a perfectly cooked steak washed down with a great glass of red. De Bortoli Wines recently launched their WOODFIRED Heathcote Shiraz 2015 and sent On The Chopping Board (OTCB) an exclusive gourmet food kit to make sure we enjoyed the Shiraz as it should be.

De Bortoli Wine & Gourmet Kit Provided

Along with a bottle of the recently released Shiraz, the gourmet kit included De Bortoli’s own Steak Sauce, a bottle of Premium Olive Oil and a packet of Chief Winemaker Steve Webber’s own Steak Rub (pictured). To bring all of these ingredients together, I (Taylor) decided to cook some chargrilled rib eye with a garlic and herb butter and chunky polenta-crusted potatoes to serve with De Bortoli’s Steak Sauce and WOODFIRED Heathcote Shiraz.

Before chargrilling, I marinated the rib eye in Steve’s Steak Rub and the provided Premium Olive Oil. Steve’s Steak Rub consists of rosemary, salt and pepper, and was a quick and easy way to create a flavoursome crust on the steak without having to mix up my own seasoning. I also decided to add Steve’s Steak Rub and the Premium Olive Oil to my polenta-crusted potatoes, as this is usually what I would season potatoes with anyway. The olive oil had a mellow and mild flavour that didn’t overpower from the other ingredients I was cooking with, and is definitely a versatile oil I would use in everyday cooking.

Rib Eye & Polenta Crusted Potatoes with De Bortoli Shiraz

Handcrafted using WOODFIRED Heathcote Shiraz, De Bortoli’s Steak Sauce was the ideal accompaniment to the chargrilled rib eye as the acidity from the tomato based sauce cut through the rich steak and butter perfectly. The Steak Sauce was also a great accompaniment to my chunky polenta-crusted potatoes and is a product I can see matching well with other meats, pastry, in a burger or even on a cheese plate.

The WOODFIRED Heathcote Shiraz itself is a bold and juicy wine, yet very well balanced and not too tannin-heavy. Overall, De Bortoli have crafted a simple, easy-to-use and delicious range of products that assist in cooking the perfect rib eye steak – along with a superb wine to wash it down with!
