Luigi's Delicastessen - Breakfast Platter

Luigi Delicatessen - 151 Flinders Street, Adelaide SA 5000

At only 8am on a Thursday morning, Luigi's Delicatessen is already bustling with people fitting in a coffee and hearty breakfast before they head off to work. Luigi recently invited the On the Chopping Board (OTCB) team to come in and try the new breakfast platter at the Italian café on Flinders Street. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of Luigi's Delicatessen.

Breakfast Platter ($29 per head)
We arrived and Luigi, as always, is cheerful (other Luigi reviews). How can he maintain that delight so early in the morning? Must be the coffee. Which is pretty good as Luigi has a custom blend that he selected to match the food that he serves. As we get through our coffees, out comes Luigi with the platter board and we see why we needed two tables to hold it all.

Luigi then passed around a board of freshly toasted bread and we each began to load up our plates with the generous selection of breakfast favourites in front of us. The platter consisted of house made baked beans, pork belly bacon, roasted beetroot and mushrooms, hummus, smashed avocado, poached eggs, Luigi’s house Napoli and blue cheese sauce and muesli with house made coconut yoghurt.

House made Baked Beans
Pork Belly Bacon

Mushrooms, Beetroot & Buffalo Mozzarella
The house baked beans made with a rich tomato sauce and pieces of bacon were creamy, well seasoned and delicious – a real standout for all of us. Although a little fattier than a few of us prefer our bacon, there was no denying the pork belly bacon had a fantastic smokiness and depth of flavour. Served with torn pieces of buffalo mozzarella scattered over the top, the roasted beetroot and mushrooms were a fantastic vegetable component to the platter and offered something different than most common breakfast dishes.

Sourdough Toast
On the end of the platter were two small dishes, one filled with house made hummus, and the other a smashed avocado mixture. Both were a fresh addition to the platter and complimented the other components well. Unfortunately, the poached eggs on our platter were a little inconsistently cooked with only a few runny yolks in sight around the table. However, this was overcome by Luigi’s house made Napoli sauce made from incredibly sweet, imported Italian tomatoes that is a match made in heaven with eggs and crusty toast.  Luigi’s house made blue cheese sauce also made an appearance on the board which was deliciously creamy and slightly salty yet not too overpowering as some blue cheese sauces can tend to be.

Bircher Muesli
The last item we enjoyed on the breakfast platter was the muesli that was jam-packed full of nuts and seeds and served with house made coconut yoghurt, a zesty berry sauce and fresh fruit. The coconut yoghurt was a lighter and more refreshing alternative to regular yoghurt which we all enjoyed, and it was great to see that the chef’s are making the yoghurt themselves.

Dessert Platter
Just in case we all weren’t full to the brim, Luigi then surprised us by bringing out a second platter for the morning, only this time it was filled with decadent cakes to help celebrate an OTCB team member, Sofia’s, birthday. We sang, then enjoyed a dense and slightly fudgy chocolate brownie, a soft orange polenta cake and a rich individual mousse cake topped with chocolate ganache – all of which were superb!

Overall, we enjoyed sharing the new breakfast platter and definitely didn’t walk away hungry. As usual, we were made to feel truly at home by Luigi’s generosity, warm hospitality and incredibly friendly staff.
