Cellar Door Fest - Preview 2017

2017 Cellar Door Fest Preview - Adelaide Convention Centre

We love this time of year when there is so much to see, eat and drink, and with the 2017 Cellar Door Fest quickly approaching we thought we would share some of the highlights from a recent preview night.  We thought the 2016 Cellar Door Fest preview was a blast but it looks like it can only get bigger and better.  Beginning on Friday the 24th of February 2017 at 5pm at the Adelaide Convention Centre, it's time to start your planning and get excited as there are some great new additions to the 3 day festival this year.

New this year and something we are particularly excited about is 'The Distillery' - a collaboration inclusive of ApplewoodBarossa Distilling Company, Man of Spirit, Prohibition Liquor Co and Red Hen Gin. The Distillery will house some of South Australia’s (SA) finest distillers, that festival attendees will be able to sample, meet the makers, learn about the flavours and discover how to turn these premium small batch spirits into the perfect drink.

Cocktail Masterclass
Masterclass in Action with Man of Spirit
Our first stop on the preview night allowed us to meet one of The Distillery's incumbents, Mark Reginato from Man of Spirit, who taught us all things 'spritzers' and guided us through a mini hands-on masterclass to make the perfect spritzer. Using a selection of stunning spirits and liqueurs from 'The Distillery', which are handcrafted in the Adelaide Hills, we were able to turn ourselves into instant expert cocktail makers!

Spritzers - Oz Spritz & Limoncello Spritz
Deli Platter by Adelaide Convention Centre
Fresh and glorious smallgoods and cheese platters were provided by the Adelaide Convention Centre's Delicatessen for us to enjoy while sipping on our newly made cocktails. The Delicatessen will be serving up cheeses, smallgoods, healthy platters, wraps, paella and pizza during the festival to keep you nourished throughout all your wine and spirit tasting.

Max Mason from The Henry Austin with Canapes
Next we were lucky to meet Max Mason, the owner of The Henry Austin, who is one of the ambassador's of the festival this year. Max will be hosting a 'Long Table Dining Experience' along with Kris Lloyd from Kris Lloyd Artisan cheeses to create an unforgettable degustation dining experience.

Golden Gaytime Macarons by the Sugar Man Patisserie
Max will also team up with the Sugar Man Patisserie for a 'Gimme Some Sugar' masterclass giving you the chance to indulge in a selection of decadent sweets all crafted from SA produce paired with sticky wines and liqueurs. If the golden gaytime macarons we devoured on the preview night is anything to go by, you will definitely be in for one sweet tasty treat! Tickets only $30 for this masterclass so get in quick.

Vinteloper Wine Tasting

Another new feature at this year's festival will be grape stomping! Vinteloper will be offering visitors the opportunity to stomp grapes at the exhibitor booth. At the preview we only had the chance to taste their delicious wines but we are definitely putting grape stomping at the festival on our to do list!

Salted Caramel Chocolate Truffles by Red Cacao
Raspberry Macarons (front) & Pistachio Macarons (back) by Red Cacao
Our last stop on the preview tour showcased two local SA businesses in Red Cacao Chocolatier and Ambra Liqueurs.  They will be part of the 'Chocolate and Wine Trail' at the Cellar Door Fest, which will allow you to become more familiar with pairing alternative wine varietals with Adelaide Hills Red Cacao Chocolatier chocolates.  Not sure if there could be a more delicious trail, especially since we had the opportunity to try the amazing, melt in your mouth salted caramel chocolate truffles.

Liqueur Cocktails by Ambra Liqueurs

Chocolatino Liqueurs

Ambra Chocolatino Liqueurs
The truffles were paired with the Ambra Liqueur Chocolatino, a milk based chocolate liqueur, which helped to balance out the sweet and salty of the truffle. Ambra Liqueurs also host a once a month free Friday night liqueur tastings and tour of their cellar door, which can be booked via their facebook page.  The next one will be held on the 3rd of March 2017.

With 180 producers lined up for the festival and 20 new ones for 2017, we can't wait to get in and start our food and beverage sampling.  We hope to see you there!
