Melbourne Quick Chop! Meatball & Wine Bar

Meatball & Wine Bar - 135 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000

When you live in Melbourne it’s hard to avoid the array of great restaurants on Flinders Lane. The Meatball and Wine Bar is no exception.

The space is stunning. It is dimly lit with exposed brick interior and a long copper bar. Natural light enters from the floor to ceiling window where passers-by are able to look inside the restaurant. I (Christina) decided to sit at the bar in front of the window. A prime spot for people watching. The hospitable waiter placed a menu on my table but there was no need, I knew what I wanted. To my surprise it was a salad. Pea, mint and fregola with warm chicken meatballs. I had already seen it on their Facebook page that morning, hence the powerwalk to my car on my lunch break to mend my hunger pain.

Now, my Nonna is famous for her meatballs, so much so that I entered them in a TV show competition (Recipe to Riches) and they got through a number of rounds. So, you could say that I am a meatball enthusiast. I have a high expectation when it comes to meatballs.

Pea, Mint & Fregola with Warm Chicken Meatball Salad.  Served with Foccaccia

The meal came out in under 10 minutes which is perfect for avoiding the side eye from your boss when you stroll in late. It looked like the perfect summer dish, a fusion of different greens. The taste was extremely refreshing, flavourful and the meatballs exceeded my expectations. They were soft and the flavours mixed well with the salad. Whenever I order a salad I leave feeling dissatisfied and still peckish, but this salad was unlike those other boring bowls of leaves I have eaten before. It had substance.

Also on offer are beef, pork, fish and vegetable balls and good news for the coeliac, all balls are gluten free. They can be paired with a sauce, an Italian tomato, a white creamy or a pesto salsa verde. Plus, a side of your choice ranging from cannellini beans to pasta. Starters also share the classic Italian theme with a range of charcuterie and cheeses, miniballs, carpaccio and grilled sausage.

So grab yourself a wine or their signature Prossecco spritz and enjoy a classic Italian dish. I’ll definitely be back.
