Trouble & Strife - Now this is Brunch!

Spending days in search of somewhere open for brunch on Good Friday, with enough vegetarian options to suffice our one day a year good Catholic girl ways, we settle on trying Trouble and Strife on Goodwood Road. We don't have a booking (and I'm not sure if they take bookings) but we arrived at around 10am to a full house, with another half a dozen people waiting outside for a table. It's a small cafe to start with but we were prepared for the wait with not a lot of options open on this public holiday.

Luckily, we only had to wait for approximately 10 minutes before we were whisked to a communal table inside. Our coffee orders were taken right away and we pondered over the hand written menu posted on the wall - a clear sign the menu changes frequently, which we love to see as this can only mean fresh seasonal produce used here, creating new and exciting dishes constantly, giving us reason to return over and over again!

Almond Milk Latte $4.50
It was a long 10 to 15 minute wait before our coffees are brought out and our orders taken but luckily the coffee was good (Dawn Patrol) coffee beans and almond milk (MilkLab - good but not my absolute favourite brand), kept us happily occupied until our brunch arrived.

House Made Baked Beans $9 (added Haloumi extra $3)
I (Amanda) selected the house made baked beans with rocket, sourdough bread and a garnish of feta.  As the dish was only $9 I thought it may be a small serving size, so I decided to add a side of haloumi as I didn't want to go home hungry! What an assumption to make! Small serving size it was not... it was like the never-ending bowl of beans and I loved every minute of it! With a generous 3 slices of toasted sourdough bread (with a splash of olive oil) to aid in scooping up the saucy beans and the fresh bite of the rocket to cut through the warming breakfast bowl (which I couldn't help thinking would be particularly awesome come Winter) I was very happy with my menu pick. The feta melting through the bean mixture to add some creaminess and my added serve of halloumi grilled well and cut nice and thick to obtain some textural difference. This dish was a great example of simple, tasty food done really well for wonderful value.

French Toast Special $14
My friend chose the special of the day - french toast topped with berry compote, mascarpone and a granola type dukkah. My friend inhaled her breakfast while I was still halfway through my own (a clear indication she enjoyed it!) but I did sneak in a spoonful and loved the hit of sweetness from the berries and exciting textures of the soft french toast and crunch of the nuts and seeds on top.

We thoroughly enjoyed our brunch at Trouble and Strife on this busy public holiday morning. The food was full of flavour, the serves were generous, the price tag even more so and the place was buzzing... what more could you want!? We will be back.

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: Vegetarian options are available.
Child Friendly: Casual enough but no specific kids menu that I saw but a blackboard and coloured chalk by the counter, which could make for some handy child entertainment.

Ambiance: 4.5/5 - Casual, hip and rustic, lots of buzz and line-ups to make you feel that you are hanging out at the place to be!
Service: 4/5 - Table service and very friendly staff. Just a tad slow on the coffees and taking of the orders today but it was an extra busy day being Good Friday.
Food: 9.5/10 -  No complaints here!  Great brunch.
