The Republic Norwood - Winter Menu Tasting

The Republic - 120 Magill Road, Norwood SA 5067

We have visited The Republic a number of times, our last visit back in Autumn 2016, and on a whole have always been enjoyable food experiences. After a recent update to the chef team, new Head Chef, Michael Ielasi, has worked some new magic ensuring typical run of the mill pub food is not served here. Luckily the famous rotisserie of The Republic, that we know and love, will continue to be showcased and that news was something we at On The Chopping Board (OTCB) were happy to hear. OTCB was invited to The Republic Norwood for a tasting of the new Winter menu. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of The Republic.

Oven Baked Field Mushrooms $11
On this evening we had the opportunity to try a little from many dishes across the varied menu. The starters of 'oven baked field mushrooms' were a juicy and tasty start to the night. Lots of great flavour was packed into the sauce with the garlic, thyme, butter and sweet sherry vinegar coupled with creamy dollops of ricotta atop the small mushrooms made this a delicious mouthful.

Haloumi Fries $12
Fried cheese has to be everyone's favourite, right?! So it was an easy 'yum' when biting into these 'haloumi fries' served with lemon and chipotle dipping sauce. Looking just like large potato fries, the lightly crumbed haloumi kept their shape well and were easy to dip into the slightly spiced and smooth chiptole sauce.

Super Charged Salad $16
Next we tried 3 of the 4 available salads on the restaurant menu. The 'Super Charged' and the 'Lean Green' salads are also available on the Superfoods Lunch Menu for only $12 and are a good healthy fresh option.

The 'Super Charged Salad' consisted of sweet potato, pumpkin, lentils, pepitas, sunflower seeds, sprouting seeds, kale and cumin yoghurt. With a slight Middle Eastern feel, this gluten free and vegetarian salad would make for a great side to the rotisserie meat plates on offer. Tasty enough on its own as a lunch time offering but probably not enough to fill our foodie stomachs, so we would suggest adding chicken or haloumi.

Lean Green Salad $18
The 'Lean Green Salad' consisted of broccoli, mung beans, quinoa, pepitas, baby spinach, kale, spring onion and soy beans, mixed together with an apple cider vinaigrette. This was another fresh and healthy option on the menu (also available for $12 at lunch). Lots of great textures and with the addition of the quinoa, a great gluten free and vegetarian salad with sustenance.

Slow Roast Rotisserie Lamb Salad $18
The 'Slow Roast Rotisserie Lamb Salad' with tomato, olives, feta, cucumber and tzatziki is a great salad for the meat eating salad lovers. All it needed was a side of pita bread and you could make your own yiros with this salad! It had all the Mediterrenean flavours all on one plate. The salad ingredients fresh and the lamb tender and juicy and some bits nicely charred for a moreish textural balance.

Rotisserie Combo $32
Getting stuck into the mains, we were excited to try more from the rotisserie. This dish is a combination of pork and lamb served with caramelized apple, crackling, red wine jus and assorted vegetables. Both the pork and lamb were tender and juicy, cooked and seasoned well. It was great to be served different accompaniments on the plate to pair with the different meats. We were so glad they didn't leave the crackling off the plate as the crunchy delight is always a favourite of ours and made this dish.

Sous Vide Chicken Breast $28
You can always tell when a chicken breast has been cooked using the 'sous vide' method, as when you carve through the fillet with ease and you see juicy meat inside, surely it hasn't been cooked any other way, as this cut of meat is easily found dry in other venues... but not at The Republic. So don't think twice about ordering this dish, served with Paris mash, sautéed asparagus and a red wine jus, it was a delicious, warming and comforting dish, great for the Winter months.

Crispy Skinned Atlantic Salmon $29
Salmon the crowd pleaser was exactly that here. This crispy skinned Atlantic salmon with braised spinach, currants, crispy chick peas, hummus and grilled lemon had more of those Middle Eastern flavours we experienced in the Super Charged Salad. A great flavoursome dish, with exciting textural elements with the use of crispy chick peas and crispy skin atop the tender salmon that just melted in the mouth.

Sticky Pork Belly $29
We loved the 'Sticky Pork Belly' served with soba noodles, quinoa, soybean, broccolini, garlic and a black vinegar dressing. This Asian style pork belly was so moist and moreish with the tangy black vinegar dressing we really didn't enjoy having to share this dish with the fellow diners! We love soba noodles and this side of noodles with broccolini and interesting addition of quinoa was a great way to bulk up the dish while bringing some nice healthy flavours.

Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream Sandwich
Dessert is our favourite time of the night and it did not disappoint! The 'Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream Sandwich' with hot fudge sauce was everything we wanted it to be! Decent slices of fudgy chocolate brownie sandwiching creamy vanilla ice cream was a sweet tooth's thrill to dip into the thick and hot chocolate fudge sauce... yum! You need to love chocolate to love this dish.

Warm Sticky Date Cake
Sticky date pudding is another weakness of ours and this 'Warm Sticky Date Cake' served with dark toffee sauce and vanilla bean parfait, made us weak at our dessert loving knees! Soft, moist, warm and full of that sweet date flavour was topped off perfectly with the rich caramelised flavours of the toffee sauce and the more neutralising element of the creamy vanilla bean parfait. A classic Winter dessert that should be on every Winter menu!

Throughout the night we were treated to wine tastings from 3 different wineries featured on the current wine list. We enjoyed all the wines we tasted from Hahndorf Hill Winery, Karrawatta Wines and Lino Ramble Wines, so if you spot them on the menu next time, then give them a try for yourself.

We had a great time at The Republic winter menu launch, so much so that we forgot we were dining in a pub, as the food was that little bit more special, intriguing and complex, enjoyed in a lovely cosy dim-lit setting, that we could have sat in for hours and hours!
