Mamachau - More than just Bao's

Mamachau - Shop 3 / 118 King William Street, Adelaide SA 5000

Mamachau has been part of the Adelaide food scene for awhile now. They're pretty famous for their Bao, so one lunch time, we thought we'd head on down to see what else they had to offer. The menu is quite large now, including rice bowls, salads, snacks and other specials which appear to rotate with the seasons.

The feast!
After a little bit of discussion and a fair bit of reading (the menu options are spread out over numerous walls and hand written on posters along the counter, so it can be a little overwhelming), we finally decided on two of the rice boxes along with a side of the day's special bao and the kimchi fried rice balls. We also added a Vietnamese iced coffee to wash it down with.

Top left of the feast picture is the Korean style fried chicken (KFC) rice box with Asian slaw, pickled carrots, coriander and steamed rice.  A good sized portion for the price ($9.50) and filling enough on it's own for a lunch meal.  Lots of steamed rice at the bottom to get you full, although a few minutes overcooked for me but mixed around with the other ingredients it's not overly noticeable.  The KFC is well seasoned and tender, the crumb not particularly crispy but still enjoyable.  The slaw, pickled carrots and coriander bring the much needed acidity and freshness to the box.

Top right of the picture is the master pork belly rice box. The pork was the star in this rice box. The pork was lovely and soft, with the stock giving a good depth of flavour. Complementing this was the ample amounts of rice and the crunchy nuts. Overall, the box was delicious and filling, and a lunch option that was easily taken back to a desk or eaten on the few tables that are there. The Vietnamese iced coffee was a delicious addition, sweet and strong, and helped keep those post feast yawns at bay in the afternoon.

Kimchi Rice Balls - $5
One of the special sides that got us excited were the kimchi rice balls. The fried balls of sticky rice mixed with kimchi were served with a spicy mayo. The taste and texture can be likened to an arancini - soft on the inside and crunchy on the outer. The kimchi added a nice sour note, contrasting to the crunch of the crumbs and the creamy mayo. A nice side if you're feeling extra hungry.

Gogi Bao $4

We tried one of the limited edition bao's on the menu at the time named the 'Gogi Bao'.  It consisted of an 18 hour slow roasted pork, lettuce, pickled cucumbers and Asian green sauce.  This was delicious!  Our picture above does not do it justice but the soft pillowy bao filled with the secret 'Asian green sauce' and juicy well marinated pork was very flavourful.  A tangy burst from the pickled cucumbers and we could have easily eaten 3 or 4 of these.

We had a great lunch at Mamachau - lots of tasty food, with lots of options depending on what you feel like on the day. But, make sure you get a bao on the side of whatever you choose.

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: A couple of tofu options available.
Child Friendly: The menu has enough options to keep the kids happy, and there's just enough room to sit. But you can also take away and eat in nearby Victoria Square.

Ambiance: 3/5 - Small and open. Lots of chatter from customers.
Service: 4/5 - Service was quick and friendly, when we had questions, they were able to help us out.
Food: 8.5/10 -  Lunch options were filling and tasty, along with some delicious sides.

In total OTCB gives Mamachau 15.5/20 chops On The Chopping Board.
