The Upside on Prospect - Expect some upside

The Upside on Prospect - 1/81 Prospect Road, Prospect, SA 5082

Situated in what was once a Cocolat (and many a cafe before that) is a much needed addition to Prospect Rd - The Upside on Prospect. Having lived around the area for over 10 years now, I (Nathan) have always felt there was room for a cafe that was a little more approachable than some of the others around. So when The Upside opened up, I gave it a few weeks to settle before heading in.

We had a quick review of the short, but focused menu for breakfast and decided on what could be considered breakfast staples, albeit each with a little twist - one breakfast cob, and one smashed avo on toast. There is also a small kids menu with a few simple choices, and the kids decided on pancakes each.

Upside Cob loaf - $16
When I spotted the cob loaf on Facebook the night before heading on in, I knew I had to have it. It's a artisan cob loaf stuffed with bacon, tomato, mushrooms, spinach and onion topped with shredded cheese and a fried egg. Quite a mouthful it was to eat too! The cob is huge, easily enough for one big breakfast eating person, and, if you like smaller breakfasts, you could easily share it too. It's thoroughly stuffed with ingredients, almost overwhelming initially when trying to work out how to eat it. But, it's delicious and not too difficult when you decide on a strategy and stick to it. I would cut off a part of the side, pick out a bit of the middle, creating a custom mouthful each time.

Every ingredient was delicious, great smokey bacon, loads of sweet tomatoes and some nice and firm mushrooms too. I definitely didn't need to get lunch after this. I missed out on the side of relish that was on the video and pictures on the Facebook page, and I would have liked that at times with some of the pieces of bread I didn't have ingredients left for.

Smashed Avocado - $14 (with a side of 2 eggs +$5)
The smashed avocado came out looking delicious. A very very generous heap of well seasoned smashed avocado, packed with a lot of feta too, was atop some crunchy rye bread, with a little balsamic dressing. As ordered, two poached eggs came too, and both were served as runny as requested. A good outcome considering some failures recently with poached eggs at other cafe's. The creamy avocado, salty feta, tart balsamic and sweet cherry tomatoes all worked together to make a delicious breakfast, and as with the loaf, a very filling breakfast.

Kids pancakes - $8
The kids pancakes were served drizzled in maple syrup, lots of strawberry slices and a side of vanilla ice cream. Upon delivery we were quietly told if there was a need for any more of the sides, to just ask and they'll bring it over. I was lucky enough to try a bit of the pancake, which was fluffy and sweet, and was informed that the vanilla ice cream was delicious. It was definitely an ample serving size for most kids, and was happily eaten by both kids.

Latte - $4
Standard with any early morning breakfast is the house latte. It was a good coffee, I unfortunately didn't take note of the beans or milk used, but would return for another.

Overall, we had a great breakfast at Upside on Prospect, it's a cafe that Prospect Rd has been missing for awhile. The food was delicious, service and ambiance great. The addition of some kids toys, including colouring books helps to keep the kids happy too. They are included in the Entertainment Book and UBEREats, so make sure you take the opportunity to try them out.

Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: A few options with a clearly labelled menu.
Child Friendly: Definitely very child friendly. Specific kids menu with smaller portions (lunch too), lots of high chairs, toys and colouring books. I would suggest to choose one of the bench seats with 2 tables if you've got the kids - a little more room when all the plates come out!

Ambiance: 4/5 - Nothing too fancy but warm and comfortable.
Service: 4/5 - Great service, including the offering of additional toppings for the kids.
Food: 8.5/10 -  Tasty breakfasts, big serves and great value!

In total OTCB gives Upside on Prospect 16.5/20 chops On The Chopping Board.
