Melbourne! Oriental Teahouse - Putting the Yum in Yum Cha

Oriental Teahouse - 455 Chapel Street, South Yarra, VIC, 3141

How great is the Yum Cha concept? You sit down and tick what you want on a slip of paper or trollies come to you and you can view and pick before you eat. That never happens! Imagine if that happened at every restaurant, all the indecisive orderers in this world would be a lot happier. I (Christina) came across Oriental Teahouse during a shopping trip down Chapel Street, that offer both these ordering options. I was in dire need of a shopping snack, so I happily sat down in this gorgeous interior, ordered a tea and viewed the menu.

'Salt and Pepper Calamari' $16.80

We started with the 'Salt and Pepper Calamari', which was dusted in garlic salt and served with wonton crisps. The first thing I thought when tasting this dish was "finally, a great salt and pepper calamari". Because let's be honest everyone does this dish but not everyone can do it great. The wonton crisps were a good addition and the calamari batter was crunchy. Thank GOD!

'Pork Spring Rolls' $8.80

Moving on to our next dish, 'Pork Spring Rolls'. Another classic that can be easily ruined. It is so dissatisfying when you are treating yourself to a deep-fried treat and it's average. All those calories for nothing. This often happens to me with spring rolls as they can be soft and pretty much empty, and you just know they're from the frozen food aisle. These spring rolls were the opposite. I took a bite and was thankful to see it was filled to the brim with pork. To top it off, the pastry was flaky and crunchy.

'Ginger Prawn Dumplings' $9.80

Now when it comes to ginger and prawns, there is always a smile on my face. Wrap them into a dumpling and you have yourself a winning combination.  I loved how I could actually taste the ginger in these dumplings. Often meals say ginger in the title but the taste is barely there.

'Chilli Wagyu Beef Dumplings' $10.80

The 'Chilli Wagyu Beef Dumplings' marinated in kaffir lime served with a house made chilli sauce were easily my favourite. They were stunning. The chilli oil dressing was the perfect pairing. This was actually the dish that had me returning to Oriental Teahouse to review the yum cha menu. I am the indecisive orderer, so my go to is to just ask the waiter. He revealed to me his favourite dish, the wagyu beef dumplings. Done. I was in heaven. Hence, I returned to eat these dumplings again, along with additional dishes and reviewed their menu.

'Duck Pancakes'
'Asian Greens' $14.80

Finally, we had the duck pancakes and Asian greens, both dishes were good however nothing fantastic. I found the pancakes a little floury compared to others I have had in the past, but I am being a little nit-picky.

The meals at Oriental Teahouse are not overfilled with numerous ingredients and the dishes are simple but delicious. All up, our yum cha lunch came to approximately $55 for the two of us and we were full. I would highly recommend going for yum cha with friends. It's a great price for quality food. The interior is also stunning and full of lovely light.

Ambiance: 5/5 - Smart casual.
Service: 5/5 - Friendly staff with table service.
Food: 8/10 - Great tasty food - trays come often, so never waiting around for your next plate.
