Amami Japanese Cocktail Bar - 57 Nassau Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222


On The Chopping Board (OTCB) was recently invited to a tasting of treats from Amami Japanese Cocktail Bar. All food and beverages provided were complimentary.

Located on Nassau Avenue, Brooklyn, lies Amami Japanese Cocktail Bar, a Japanese eatery offering brunch, lunch and dining options in a rustic contemporary setting. Upon entry, we are greeted by our server who provides us with a sampling of different items available on their menu.

Japanese Old Fashioned ($12)
To start our lunch feast off, we are offered the Japanese Old Fashioned, one of the restaurants most popular cocktails. Iwai Japanese Whiskey, House Made Ginger Mint Syrup and Angostura Bitters. While I (Mirko) typically lean more towards Gin based cocktails, I did enjoy the flavour profile of the Japanese Old Fashioned.

Miso Glazed Cod ($11)
First on the menu is the Miso Glazed Black Cod. The miso glaze was reduced just enough, such that it provided a nice sweet flavour, and wasn't too thick or burnt. The cod was nicely cooked however I personally would have preferred a crunchier skin than what was provided.

Yakitori selection (2 for $5)
Next on the menu was a selection of yakitori. Yakitori by definition is typically associated with chicken however the term is used more wider to reflect the skewering of different ingredients. On today's menu, King Oyster Mushrooms, Shishito Peppers, Chicken Gizzards and Chicken Heart paired with a matcha salt. The mushrooms were definitely a favourite of mine, however the gizzards and hearts were not to my liking. For those who are a little more adventurous, definitely give these a go.

Tsukiji products of the day ($6 each or 5 for $25)
Our server then presented us with a sample platter of 5 different sashimi items.

1. Aodai with organic miso
2. Kinme dai with sancho pepper and sea salt
3. Hi kurodai with wasabi and gold leaf
4. Baby kanpachi with crunchy garlic
5. Ara with spicy daikon

At the time we are presented with this dish, Head Chef, Nick Wang greets us and lets us know that 7 years of training is required to prepare the sashimi presented in front of us. All sashimi is expertly prepared without any hints of fishy overtones, and the pairing of seasonings works well. Item 3 is definitely a favourite of mine. 

Aji 4 ways ($18)
A visual highlight of the lunch is the Aji 4 ways, a full Japanese Jack Mackerel prepared in 4 different ways. Tartare, nigiri, sashimi and fried fish head and bones. All 4 preparations are done well with the highlight being the fried fish bones which are like crackers. I could imagine myself sitting in an Izakaya downing some beers and nibbling on these moreish treats.

Tonkotsu Ramen ($15)
To finish off the meal, we were given the Tonkotsu Ramen. Pork bone based soup with chashu, soft boiled egg, scallion and garlic oil. The broth is deep and we are told that it has been brewing for 12 hours. The broth is also coupled with a house made chilli oil should you want to add some heat to the dish. This is definitely going to be a popular item with the colder months approaching.

With a lunch menu that runs from Monday - Friday (12pm - 5pm), a large dinner menu and weekend brunch specials from 12pm - 5pm, if you are in the neighbourhood give Amami Japanese Cocktail Bar a go.
