Anchovy Bandit - Menu Tasting

Anchovy Bandit - 3/98 Prospect Road, Prospect SA 5082

Just saying the word 'pizza' and we automatically feel a warm and fuzzy feeling within us!  Surely pizza is one of the most loved foods in the world... it definitely is in our food loving world and we couldn't wait to try the new pizza bar on the suburban block, Anchovy Bandit.  When On The Chopping Board (OTCB) was invited to the Prospect Road located pizza and wine bar, we arrived on a crisp cool evening, to a warm, inviting and delightfully smelling venue.

Bonnie Doon cocktail

The interior was casual but stylish, with an art-deco influence, and an impressive bar took up most of one side of the venue, which caught our eye numerous times over dinner with lots of cool cocktail making occurring. The warm, moderately dim lighting set the warm cosy ambiance perfect to commence our first drinks of the night... the Bonnie Doon cocktail - made with strawberry gum, black tea, Adelaide Hills Distillery dry vermouth, vermut and lemon. A wonderfully light and refreshing aperitif that prepared our stomachs for the upcoming carb feast that awaited.

Antipasto Platter

While sipping on our cocktails, we devoured an antipasto plate filled with a variety of shareable delights.  From thinly sliced, melt-in-the-mouth cold meats, to warm house made sourdough bread, pickled cauliflower, fresh local cheese, frittata and of course anchovies, it was a great starter with lots of flavours and textures that we (Amanda and Taylor) enjoyed sharing.

Signorina Margarita Pizza $19

Next we were very excited to get stuck into the pizza tasting part of the night!  First up the 'Signorina Margarita' with tomato, fior di latte and fresh basil.  Anchovy Bandit is a Neapolitan inspired pizza bar and their wood oven pizzas reflected that big fluffy crust, thinner base and light to moderate spread of toppings.  The simplicity of the tomato, cheese and basil was a winning combination thanks to the fresh and high quality ingredients used.

Mushroom Pizza $22

The 'Mushroom' pizza with forest mushrooms, stracchino, fontina, fresh rocket, thyme and porcini salt was another tasty combination.  We love mushrooms, so this pizza hit the spot for us with a nice rich earthy mushroom flavour and cheesy decadence, balanced well with the freshness of the rocket.

Pork Sausage Pizza $22

The 'Pork Sausage' pizza with chunks of juicy pork fennel sausage, lashings of creamy bocconcini and provolone, sliced red onion and diced broccolini was another tasty pizza topping combination.  Pork sausage lovers would like this one best but with the inclusion of the sweetness of the broccolini softening the meaty richness, it would appeal to many palates.

Walk the Line Pizza $22

For those who like it hot, 'Walk the Line' pizza with spicy nduja, olives, red onion, fior di latte and fresh chilli is the one for you.  We love to work up a chilli sweat and most of the time we will expect a hot chilli dish and finish it barely noticing a kick of heat.  Nothing to worry about here, chilli, noted!  We were grabbing for our water glasses after this one and loving every minute!

Carb on Carb Pizza $21

The lucky last 'Carb on Carb' pizza with gnocchi, gruyere and burnt sage butter caught our eye first on the menu and we were wishing on a pizza star this one would be served at the tasting!  Yes it sounds over-indulgent, yes it sounds like too many carbs all in one bite but oh my goodness it was our favourite of the night!  That burnt sage butter packed so much deliciousness especially combined with the creamy and salty melted gruyere cheese and pillowy lightness of the gnocchi.  We are not sure we could visit Anchovy Bandit again and not order the carb on carb!

Salad of charred cos, lentils, fetta, walnut and anchovy dressing $9

To cleanse our palates and break up the pizza carb feast we shared a side dish of charred cos, lentils, fetta, and walnuts with a buttermilk dressing and topped with salted anchovies.  Like no other side salad we have ever experienced, we loved the creative combination of the lentils with salty anchovies and creamy fetta and the crunch of the walnuts.

Some may say, oh not another pizza bar, but Anchovy Bandit won us over thanks to the incredible pizzas, fun and creative sides and starters, classic with a modern twist cocktails, chic but homely ambiance and friendly service, that has had us returning already, to dine in and also takeaway for lazy nights in. We also love that you can conveniently book online!
